I'm having a problem with my computer.

When I'm playing a game or something, my computer goes to this screen --- "signal out of range" and it flashes. I've had this happen only a few times before, but it's becoming more frequent now.

Why is this happening to me?

The video drivers for newer monitors may cause this error to appear.

This behavior can occur if the signal from the video adapter exceeds the scan range of the new monitor. The video adapter setting for updating the screen (the refresh rate) is incompatible with the monitor.

To resolve this behavior, either change the refresh rate, or change the video adapter settings.

To change the refresh rate:

Restart the computer, and while it is restarting, press F8 until the Startup menu appears. Press 3, and then press ENTER to start the computer in Safe mode.

Right-click the desktop, click Properties , and then click Settings .

Click Advanced , click Adapter , and then click Adapter Default from the Refresh Rate list.

Click OK , click OK again, and then click Yes to restart the computer in Normal mode.

You can set the colors and screen area to your preferences under Display Properties .

To change the video adapter settings:

Restart the computer, and while it is restarting, press F8 until the Startup menu appears. Press 3, and then press ENTER to start the computer in Safe mode.

Right-click the desktop, click Properties , and then click Settings .

Click Advanced , click Adapter , and then click Change .

Click Next , and then click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want .

Click Next , click Show all hardware , and then click Standard display types under Manufacturers .

Click Standard Display Adapter (VGA) , and then click Next .

Click Yes , click Next , click Finish , and then click Yes to restart the computer.

After the computer starts, right-click the desktop, click Properties , and then click Settings .

Click 256 colors , click Apply , and then restart the computer.

After the computer starts, click Start , point to Settings , click Control Panel , and then double-click System .

Click Device Manager , click View devices by type , and then click Display adapters .

Click Standard Display Adapter (VGA) , click Remove , and then click OK .

Install all updated monitor drivers.

Hello. I have the same problem in Windows NT.
The problem is there is no safe mode.
Can anyone help???

You don't need to be in safe mode to adjust these settings.

You don't need to be in safe mode to adjust these settings.

But, This error happens before the computer boots into the GUI--right after the initial blue screen .......

Jrclare,
It sounds to me like you need to check your BIOS settings.
Heres a clue, older machines have SHADOW ROM CACHEING, this basically means that certain memory address are taken and used to store your GRAPHICS CARD BIOS etc, to try and speed those cards up.

The more recent 3D OPEN GL etc Cards don't tend to need the SHADOW ROM, as they have their own Processor for the 3D capability, so you can DISABLE most/All of the SHADOW ROM options.

(This should knock your blue screen out if I'm correct, as I think your one is more likely to be MEMORY problems)

Oh yeah, good point Stryder. There's generally one other setting as well, Palette Snooping. But this generally has to do with your motherboard or vid card looking for a color scheme, or literally trying to create a color that is not on one of the palettes (256 colors, 16-bit high color, which is really 65,000 colors, 32-bit true, etc....)

adjust the refresh cycle to something the monitor can handle. BTW, sounds like the first error is generated by the monitor which sounds like a faulty connection to me.

My god! This is about my 10th dead thread that you guys have ressurected. Can't they be left to die in peace?!

Rule of thumb: If you're using windows, don't 'play' with settings.

Almost two years old! Thanks for pointing that out Xerxes, DOH

Xerxes would you like me to use a stricter method of locking threads that are currently unlocked?

Heh
No, I really don't mind. I just find it funny that threads posted when I first came here are still alive.

The last one that reared its head came up on WE&P, on the possibility of WWIII....Before the war in Afghanistan, and any thoughts of one in Iraq.

Looks like the only thing that hasn't changed in that time is windows :m:

I had the same problem when I upgraded my Nvidia driver. Try rolling back the driver or updating your video card driver.
