When you're walking down the sidewalk in a city or town during the day, and a stranger is walking the other way, and no one else is around but the two of you, how uncomfortable do you generally feel as you're approaching each other?

Assume for the purpose of this question that you don't feel physically threatened by them... and you're not wearing sunglasses, if that matters.

I feel slightly uncomfortable, I usually don't make eye contact, try to keep my normal pace...I'm generally very self-concious when someone is walking past me and I'm usually relieved when they eventually walk by

I'm not uncomfortable and I usually greet them with a "hi" while making eye contact. :)

It depends on the stranger walking by. If it is a nice old lady then i would be rather comfortable but if it was a teenager with his pants hanging down to his knees and walking as if he had a limp would make me uncomfortable. But i am glad when they eventually pass by or turn another place before i approach them.

I usually look down. I have this thing about looking people in the eyes. I find it hard to do and at times it comes across as being rude, stuck up. The only time I look into anyones eyes is if I am comfortable with them (friend, gf, whatever). I will periphally look at the stranger walking down the street and if I sense him look then I glance up. If he smiles I smile. If not I look back down. So yeah, I'm just a tad bit uncomfortable.

I'm a little bit uncomfortable, because people have a tendency to really stare at me.

why should you feel uncomfortable? i noticed that people tend to look down or away so i make a point of looking at everybody i pass. we usually exchange a smile or a nod of the head. sometimes a hi, depends. however, on a new york street, you just tend to ignore everybody and they ignore you. in the most crowded places, you're usually the most alone.
