    Normally I would say no,

But. Given our heavy economic reliance, and the abundance of uranium which IMO, we can access. It would be a huge deterrent, and because we are still a friend and ally of the US, we would not be condemned as strongly as if, say New Zealand were to get nukes. (we'd raise all hell).

So, I open the question to all sciforumers from round the world.

Should us Aussies get nukes ?, We won't use them on new zealand, we promise.

    No.

    No. No. No.

We have no need for nuclear weapons. It is bad enough that Asia sees us as a US watchdog in the region. If we were to start stockpiling nuclear warheads, it would make our position in the Asia Pacific region a lot more fragile.

Why would we need to stock nuclear weapons? Who poses that much of a threat to us that would require us to start developing such forms of weaponry?

No. What good would it do you? So long as you have a standing professional army and an alliance with someone with nukes Australia should be fine without the added cost of keeping nukes.

in all seriousness we dont want or need them, actually we are in a better position WITHOUT them. For instance say china was that desprate for resorces that they invaded us, well NZ maybe the US (if they could be bothered) and england would help us and we would be imune from chiness nukes as a signtory to the non perliferation treaty. If china DID use nukes on us then EVERY signitory would be legally bound to destroy them.

Now if we had nukes and were nuked then thats just fair game and wouldnt be a reason for eroup to get involved.

HOWEVER the idea of us being atacked is ludicrious so why would we want to get involved in that? the only benifit would be a chance to become a permident member of the world dictatorship (otherwise known as the UN security council)

Nukes are impractical and if Australia used nukes on any major nation, they'd get slaughtered.

    I say No.

It would be hypocritical to speak out about Iran and North Korea developing nuclear weapons, then to go ahead and do the same thing ourselves.

    Asguard,

Yes, we know the US is hypocritical. That doesn't mean Australia should be, as well.

well actually we already are. Hate to break it to you but we keep surporting the idiocy so we get tared with the same brush. To bad the only truly ethical country seems to be the sheep rooters

The world doesn't need more nukes, and the US shouldn't be limited when it finally decides there's no downside to cleansing the planet of the unduly sanctimonious.

    Symmetry.

We don't need them. It would only make us in a more dangerous situation. Before a nation might have invaded and tried to conquer Australia but now they will go straight for some city killers. Plus Australia should remain neutral and develop better ties with the SCO. Australia is in Asian territory and should have better relations with its Asian nations. Not everyone has to be like Israel or Singapore.

you really want to waste money on a device which serves no purpose other than to kill civilians? once the nukes start flying we are all doomed anyway, so at least if we remain nuclear free we will have the moral high ground for the 6 months until the radiation drifts down here and kills us.

A pity you didn't think this one to its logical conclusion.

USA! USA! It must be the best, 'cos you live there. Right?

Do you seriously doubt that the US would come to your aide? Most Americans would consider an attack on Australia as tantamount to an attack on the US. Hell, I'd venture to say that Australia is most American's favorite foriegn country. Canada is too close, we sort of get on each other's nerves. England, well, we like them well enough, but we did go to war against them a couple times. But Australia? We've never gone to war, both former colonies, same language. Olivia Newton John, Mel Gibson, Elle Macpherson, Claudia Black, Come on.

I must say, I find your lack of faith disturbing.

I just came across that picture and thought I'd work it in somewhere. It's pretty funny. But if you prefer the original:

I think Australia should build nuclear power plants using French technology. After a few years of having to deal with something this powerful, they may want to reconsider building a nuclear bomb. I think they at this time they are safe from countries that have this capability that may attack them in a time of war. Its almost like Australia is neutral. Though Germany thought differently when they declared war on the world. The country as whole should decide what avenue to take rather than listening to outsiders giving advice that may not be in the best interest of Australia. So, yes I do think they should develope a nuclear program.
