As life takes an unpleasant turn for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and the information wrung from him flushes out many more of the old al-Qaida, is there any hope of a salute to good international policing, and a big thumbs-down to wrecking it all with the fog of war? Surely the chickenhawks will be taking much credit for what has been done with Pakistani cooperation, while fanning the flammes of war with the political payoff.

Is it also also possible that many sharp operatives in the US-affiliated intelligence community will be chagrined to see all the opportunities of this windfall lost if the invasion begins soon, when clutter, turmoil and mission creep keep them from following leads as al-Qaida continues to set up in Kurdistan.

Of course, no one will likely look back to the Afghan mini-invasion, and wonder how much more of al-Qaeda could have been eliminated by buying them from the Taliban, and working with the obviously talented Pakistani police and secret police. And no one will look back from the near future, and wonder why the invasion of Iraq was permitted to undermine the stability and goodwill of Pakistani partners in this productive hunt.

Anyway, score one for excellent intelligence/police work. If only they could be given more time to operate so effectively. Now watch the Northrup-Grumman and Boeing-Mcdonnell and Morton-Thiokol's version of "War on Terror" blast it all to confusing smithereens, as they assist in the regional and worldwide pollenation of Terrorism

One disastrous screwup putting one small fly in the ointment here is that the media got wind of this capture much too soon. Here was a most valid argument for secrecy, at least for a day- Lets hope Sheikh Mohammed had several "check-ins" a day for compartmentalization, otherwise, an incredible chance to grab more bad guys before they went deeper was squandered.

In another unfortunate sleuthing error, a lone american was noted posting messages to himself about the arrest. As he sat in solitude fighting off paranoia there was a knock on the door an

Don't blame the media for the early release of news of the capture. Pakistanis broke the news, and odds are in was someone sympathetic to Al Qaeda on the inside of Pakistani intelligence who wanted to warn other members of the imminent danger. It was on world news well before this country's media picked up on it.
