View Full Version : Sex and Violence!
SpyMoose 06-27-03, 12:49 PM We know that both of these things sell well, and most shows you can see on TV or movies you see contain a nice steaming portion of both.
but it has been my observation that violence gets a bigger share. In fact the amount of grossly graphic violence in the media is actualy pretty shocking. Its not even real violence, you look at it and its like poetry the way the guns go off and the fists smack people, its great violence, a kind of violence that really make us aspire to be like it.
My question is, are our morals screwed up? Should graphic sex be the one we are allowed to get more of in the media? Violence hurts, and unless done improperly sex does not. Given the choice between gorey bloody death, and erectile tissue stimulating nudity has socioty made the wrong choise?
MechTech 06-27-03, 04:04 PM There's nothing wrong with a little violence on TV or in video games:D
Besides.....think of it like this. Would you rather that teenaged kid who has some problems to take out a gun and shoot some REAL people, or else just shoot/kill/slaughter/etc.... imaginary characters in a video game he is playing?
Great stress reliever, I'd say!:D
Plus.....nice and easy way for someone to "get it out of their system", and hence they will be less likely to take it out on anyone;)
SpyMoose 06-27-03, 11:54 PM maybe my point was im tired of playing most of those games, combat simulators and first person shooters... they all just seem to be blending into one another. But a realistic sex based game? Ohh lala. although the morals of socioty would have to change so that a cumshot is more acceptable than brain splatter for me to be able to buy it and look the cashier in the eye.
Thats why I like the net ...
much more sex and understanding than violence. :D
Sex doesn't hurt? Never seen people like Xev in bed, have you? Let's spell S A D O M A S O C H I S M.
Fraggle Rocker 07-05-03, 12:47 PM Fantasies like entertainment are where we go to have experiences, even vicarious ones, that we can't have in real life. For example, I've found in my travels that people who live in countries where private automobiles are difficult to obtain daydream about having a car and collect calendars and other pictures of cars.
In America over the past forty or fifty years, sex has become widely available. Most of us are able to have sex on an adequately regular basis, starting at an age that many self-appointed nannies find alarming, but would actually have been considered unremarkable in many societies in the Middle Ages.
Violence, on the other hand, has been greatly curbed. Whatever you think of the former phenomenon, the latter is certainly A Good Thing. You don't see fights in school playgrounds like we did. Fewer Americans join the military, and many of those who do get discharged without ever being involved in a conflict, much less being on the front lines and actually shooting people. Even hunting game isn't as common as it once was and pet abuse is way down. There are gangfights in the inner cities, but in general an increasing number of Americans go through their lives without ever being a perpetrator or victim of violence any worse than being knocked down by a bully or slapped by an angry parent or lover.
So the only way to find a release for that little spark of violence that lies deep within us, inherited from distant ancestors who had to fight to survive, is in entertainment.
Don't knock it, we need it.

dunno why but i find that kinda funny
SwedishFish 07-06-03, 12:14 AM i think i'd probably be an oddball in this topic, but frankly i'm sick of all the sex on tv and in movies. enough already! if i want to see people having sex, i'll rent pornos....or better yet, hang a mirror above my bed. stop with the sex, get on with the story.
Mystech 07-06-03, 04:16 AM I think that Fraggle Rocker is onto a good point. Violence in media is cathartic. We all have violent tendansies in one way or another, it's just the nature of human beings. All of us want to just smash someones head in now and again. We need to get it somewhere, or the complete lack of it is probably going to tempt us even more, or just make us depressed from repression. However it's just wrong to seek violence in the real world, shooting people or busting their teeth in with a metal pipe isn't good conduct in polite society. Best that we can have access to a heapin' helping of it somewhere, to quell those urges and satisfy us. It's a good thing that media provides it.
Sex is something else entirely, though we all have a desire for it, it's something that we are capable of experiencing in our real lives, without it being to the detriment of others so it's not really all that important if we put it in media or not. We're not nessisarily better off if we throw it in there, like we are if we have a fair bit of violent media.

conflict rather than cooperation?
All of us want to just smash someones head in now and again.
why? frustration resulting in misplaced anger? sorry, not me (well, very rarely i guess) of course if i have to defend myself....

i refuse to indulge in paradigms that appear illogical. besides society has penalties for inappropiate aggression. secondly i have never understoood the mechanism of the supposedly carthatic value of "pseudo" violence (movies, gaming). how does watching a "shoot em up" reduce the violent tendencies? what delusions are formed in order for this to work?
i aint no frikkin ape!

My, you must have lived a rather charmed life if the only reason you would want to beat somones face to a bloody pulp is because of missplaced anger. Many people have experienced the phenominon of having this desire and the anger was pretty well exactly placed.
There is a song called "Violent School" by the Dead Milkmen. Listen to it.
"Violence rules, violence rules."
