The Scot song is essentially a sad song, but I have always heard it played with a tempo and style suggestive of a happy ballad. Was the song originally played with a dirge-like tempo? Was it originally in a minor key? Lyrics similar to the following.
    • Ye'll take the high road and I'll take the low road and I'll be in Scotland afore ye. But me and my true love with never walk again on the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
There is a myth that the souls of Scots who die in distant lands return to Scotland via the nether regions.

The song relates to a dying Scot talking to his friend.
