Some of you might be familiar that some time back I said I was going to get a site up and running and well I pulled the plug on it pretty sharpish. At the time my real plan couldn't take shape as I was actually trying to appease some members of sciforums from being aggravated and well in the long run it didn't work.

My original intention was to create a site that didn't appear to be a knock-off of sciforums but was/is actually a complementary site. Namely somewhere Attachments could be uploaded, signatures amongst other things. Well I'm not saying I'm all done yet, however I've got a Blog system up over at www.scivillage.net (Http://www.scivillage.net)

Now the reason I mention it here is because it's for use by users of Sciforums. Afterall it's been noted that a number of users really do want a blog rather than a forum, so it makes sense to give you guys and girls what you want rather than keep having to worry about how you handle moderation.

So here it is, if you want to have a blog and contribute to one that's on Science (at least that's the genre we are going to try for) then please Subscribe to the site and state you want to be a Contributer here in this thread. (I can then boost peoples privileges so they can post to the blog)

I will be keeping an eye on it, so if someone gets out of hand their privileges and entries will be forfeit. (I'm hoping it doesn't get to that point though).

If you already have a blog, I can also link blog's to this blog you'll just have to respond to this thread with your blog URL. It's even possible to Export a blog from another site and import it into this one, however I doubt anyone would be interested in that.

Currently www.scivillage.net (Http://www.scivillage.net)
has restrictive settings in regards to it's Skin/Template, however should it prove to be popular I'll look into getting better controls for better customisation.

[Incidentally blog's will be handy for certain peoples discussions, since after all they will have the capacity to Moderate the comments made towards their blogging and in turn removes the complaint about them being unfairly moderated. ]

So as I said, if you are interested state you want to be an Author here (or your current blog URL, although I will expect a linkback) and signup as a subscriber to the website. (www.scivillage.net (Http://www.scivillage.net)) I'll hav the privileges set in about 8hrs. (when I return)

Okay seems not much a response as of yet. I've given a couple of people Author rights so far, it's up to them if they want to contribute or just have access to the site functions.

(These being Tiassa and Bentheman)

I'll add more as, when they Register for a duration (The next couple of days or so) Obviously people with blog's already aren't going to be too interested in posting, so that's why I suggested posting a link to your blog and I'll get it hooked up to the site as a link exchange.

When you get author privileges feel free to add your own article on any given subject. It should appear immediately, I'll review it live, it's risky but I'm willing to take this gamble.

[Btw, if you notice that any categories are missing that you want to post an article on, tell me and I'll add them]

Stryder, I'm not quite sure what you're offering. Are you offering us the privilege to post blog entries to a singular blog, as equal contributers? Or are we each getting our own personal blogs, hosted on SciVillage, to which only the respective owner can post? Either way, I'll consider subscribing. But as everyone here can probably tell, I can't commit to things these days. ;)

Okay, currently the software is setup as a Singular blog with Equal Contributation. Admittedly I would prefer to rig it up to be individual blog's, unfortunately that is a pitfall of the software/host currently. (Obviously changing it would require investment and well it would have to be seen that it was a working project rather than just a flash in the plan.

To be perfectly honest I grabbed both at the same time and .NET seems more appropriate for Networking. In all honesty I really need to get a development crew on these sites and others, the main problem is I don't have the funds to pay them :(

A couple of people might notice an email sent out to them, this is because I've moved from the Wordpress blog to a Drupal CMS site (Which has a simple blog system incorporated).

Currently I'm in the process of configuring things which is taking a while, however I am in need of feedback as to what people want toolwise etc, as well as needing peoples suggestions for RSS feeds.

Have there been no blog posts yet, or am I just not navigating the site properly?

Stryder

Currently there hasn't been any blog's supplied by anyone else. Admittedly I'm not much of a blogger so it's pretty difficult to break an old trend of not blogging and start writing witty articles that get read (Rather than just get placed on search engine's avoidance lists.)

This is where I was hoping those that seem to daub their life all over this forum might of been able to help out. Currently I'm in the process of looking at some "Bling factors" as currently the sterile nature of the site seems to upset Draqon's sensibilities.

In truth, I'm just waiting until I have something better than a "links" post to put up. I thought about posting the APOD link just to get started, but didn't come up with much else to put alongside it.

I'll figure something out today.

Am I correct to surmise that our intent with Scivillage is to post more scientifically-oriented material, or do we intend it to be an extension of our usual diverse discussions (sans insults and flame wars, of course)?

As I look over a preview draft of a post, I notice that the blockquote tag does not seem to be active. Is this an unusual tag, or is there a specific reason it's not turned on? Or what am I missing here?

Well I would steer to move scientifically orientated, however that might not work. I did however want to try and souce up some Science feeds for the Left column. So far I only setup a test Environmental Sciences link to a single university, I even considered hunting around Academics institutes worldwide looking for feeds. (In fact I don't think there is a single site that pools them all into one resource) however it's a mammoth task finding working feeds.

It should now appear, however currently it might need some altering for a better insite graphical looking. (It's a bit light in the greyscale to Identify a quoted area however generates indentation) I can replace the top and bottom images of the quote tags. Currently they are the default "O" shape but they can be pretty much anything. (and even different from one another)

I actually had to add a Module to deal with it (for the Formatting) otherwise it would have just been a straightfowards blockquote.

Thank you, Stryder, for both your note and the blockquote tag. But I have one other technical issue I wanted to run by you. Well, one for now.

Within the blockquote tags, the software is not recognizing return-strike blank lines between paragraphs. I attempted to force a blank line with a br tag, both open and closed according to advice I found online regarding the differences between HTML, XML, and XHTML, but to no avail. Is there an easy solution to be had via the software itself, or perhaps in the markup?

I'm such a needy brat, eh?

Thank you.

(Note on Edit: I saw you were online over at the village, so I posted the question there, as well. I mean, not that I'm trying to hound you on this, or anything. All things in due time, or something ....)

Well sciforums over the years has got the name for being a "Science Forum", we might well call that loosely based, however it's name IMHO doesn't allow much growth because it pretty much states what it is in the title. This is why I thought about trying to kickstart something to fill the Void. If it takes off then we can perhaps talk about integration etc. (For instance Image hosting that's works with the Sciforums site, so you don't end up with images disappearing over time or being collared for image leaching.)

As for Blogs etc, well it's shown a number of the posters at sciforums tend to "blog" over the forum. This I don't think was the initial intention of the forum and technically from a Moderator perspective isn't really the right material for the site. This is also why I intended to try and find something to deal with that problem so that perhaps in the future rather than having users complain about their posts being censored, Moderators can just point to them where they should be blogging, which in turn still ties in with the Community @ large.

Currently though the site is just a Petri dish just awaiting the right emergence of building blocks for evolution to occur.

Thank you, Stryder, for both your note and the blockquote tag. But I have one other technical issue I wanted to run by you. Well, one for now ...[truncated]

I've tried to go one step further and done a rather risky venture and put a WYSIWYG editor (FCKeditor) into use on the site. Obviously I've limited it's use to people with a certain privilege level so Anonymous or just causal joiners to the site won't have full function of it.

It should allow you to Blockquote and Indent to your hearts content. (Of course feel free to test drive it)

It's been altered a little (again :( ) I've still got your previous posts in a database, so they haven't been lost, although I'm going to have to work out how to retrieve them.

What I've been doing however is getting Wordpress working. Originally I wanted to run Wordpress on the site, but I couldn't. I had a problem configuring it and thought that perhaps it would only work if I had better control over the server (Something my host wouldn't let me have).

However after playing with Drupal, I managed to work out a way to configure it to allow it to install, but rather than just have a single Wordpress Blog that people shared, I've actually managed to get Wordpress MU installed. (Multi-user) which now pretty much means everyone can have their own individual blog.

Obviously to begin with there are going to be teething troubles with it, like slowdowns, bandwidth issues, storage issues etc. I will be looking to deal with them as they arise, however in the meantime I'm trying to sortout plugins and themes for future use. (I'm having to pause on the Latex front thought because I still need to work out where I can compile the CGI file)

So, if you can sign back up and I'll see what I can do about repopulating posts. (Btw, this is actually better blog software than what was being used as it allows Importing and Exporting posts/blogs)

scivillage as in ......it takes a village..........to raise a sciforumer.

let this village be the window to the outside world. let us invite activist type orgs to represent themselves (we could volunteer as well) and recruit interested
individuals or parties. a clearing house of sorts.

lets give members an opportunity to put their money where their mouth is
get their hands dirty
a lesson in civics rather than self-absorption and insularity
