Just a suggestion to the powers that be, but how about publishing some of the more interesting threads in printed form?

It would be a great advertisement for the site and also give those not 'lucky' enough to get on the Interweb a chance to see what kind of loonies/geniuses there are in the world.

No. I disagree. I think leaving all the spelling mitakes in would give it an aer of orthenticsiteee.
Besides, we all manage to read them all, right?
And if you're embarrasssaassed about people perceiving you as a dyslexic then simply go over all your old stuff and correct them yourself!!!

You would need to have a specific aim for the book.

Is it about the history?

Is it about the current state?

Is it about the nature of this community?

Is it a reflection of sciforums? A book written in the spirit of sciforum on another specific topic?

Great idea, there should be a great emphasis on World Events, and the interesting sciences, religion, and ethics. That's where the shit happens, and I think that in the book testimonials should happen with the most relevant posters. That book would sell imo, but in response we should start to charge the new posters money. MUHAHAHA! Capitalism.

If I was compiling such a book each chapter would be a different topic, "is there a god?", "abortion; right or wrong?" etc etc, and find the best, worst and ugliest posts(nothing in between) on the topics to fill the chapters. Mainly single posts but the odd back and forth discussion if it is particularly interesting (good or bad). A chapter could be designated for the particularly retarded miscelaneous posts, probably at the back of the book.

This really isn't that bad of an idea, if I was you porf I'd think about it because its "zany" and idiots buy zany things. You might make some serious scratch.

In order for something like this to work you will need to get together a team of dedicated members to do a section each. But before you can even think about adding content to a final book you have to gain permission from Porfiry and then members who contributed to each thread that will be included.

You would also need a publisher willing to publish it. Either that or someone to fork over the dough for one of those publish your own book outfits. Anyone gonna fork over the cash? Not me...

Before worrying about publishers and the like you will need to get the book together.
As for getting everyone's written permission to use thier posts, couldn't you just slip a disclaimer on the site in really small print somewhere stating that anyone who posts here does so understanding the owners can use their stuff to make beer tokens, etc.
Just don't tell anyone.

Seriously, I think it could be a 'goer'. You don't have to cram it all into one book, either. You could bring out a series of them covering all the more popular threads: Religion, Politics, THE CESSPOOL (this wil be the big seller!)

why not just hand out leaflets in internet cafes with the archive adress on, then make a little character who pisses everyone off by saying: "would you like th guided tour yet" and things like that.

I think this would be the way to go. Especially the "find the best, worst and ugliest posts(nothing in between) on the topics" part. Instead of chapters maybe just list a few hundred funny, clever, disturbing, stupid or controversial topics and give them a couple of pages each with the best and worst responses.

I was against this idea at first but in this form I think it could be interesting and funny, the kind of book you might keep in the bathroom and glance at every once in a while. And UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should the spelling or punctuation be corrected unless it's nearly unreadable, if that is the case you could follow the quote with a translation.

BTW - are you sure permission from the individuals quoted is needed? I've always assumed the stuff written in forums is fair game.
