View Full Version : Scientists Confuse Automobiles And Volcanoes (Again)

ALL the fish and birds were gone, the trees were defoliated and their mosses dead, and the local lakes and rivers were lined with yellow scum. This was the aftermath of a mysterious catastrophe in July 2005, as reported by a lodge-owner near the remote Chiginagak volcano in Alaska.
A group of geologists has now pieced together what happened. In May 2005, they say, a torrent of sulphurous liquid and mist gushed from the volcano's icy crater, leaving a trail of sulphur deposits and turning salmon spawning-grounds as acidic as lemon juice.
"We haven't seen an event like this in the historical record," says Johan Varekamp of the Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, who reviewed the group's work.
The volcanoes must be biogenic.

You tell me...:D
CharonZ 07-11-08, 06:08 PM Huh? Is there any context? What the hell does acidification has to do with cars? Or any confusion on the side of the geologists on this matter? On second thought I actually do see someone confused here.
OilIsMastery 07-11-08, 07:56 PM What the hell does acidification has to do with cars?
My guess is absolutely nothing...:D
Vkothii 07-11-08, 08:52 PM Someone got confused about some confusion they thought some scientists had, then?

do you just get your rocks off making up bullshit lies like that or do you believe your own bullshit?

than why did you try and link the 2
OilIsMastery 07-12-08, 11:33 PM than why did you try and link the 2
I didn't. It's the so-called "environ"mentalists who say all elemental compounds and environmental effects are caused by automobiles and burning dinosaurs.
Normal people know what a volcano is.
Vkothii 07-12-08, 11:47 PM all elemental compounds and environmental effects are caused by automobiles and burning dinosaursI dunno, it's the idea that environmentalists would be that moronic, that gets me...?

Have you read any threads about man-made carbon dioxide?
Vkothii 07-12-08, 11:57 PM Have you read any threads about man-made carbon dioxide? No. I've read one or two (or is it three?) about the CO2 we humans keep letting go, so it floats up into the sky somehow. Not that I need to understand why it does this, or why we keep letting it go (I don't think we actually "create" the stuff, it's more a rearrangement) - I do understand the CO2 is what photosynthesis requires (as a sort of "fuel"), and that it absorbs radiation which it re-radiates as infrared (which is, of course, also radiation).

um no environmentalists i have ever heard of have said that so your strawmaning as usual
OilIsMastery 07-13-08, 09:11 AM No. I've read one or two (or is it three?) about the CO2 we humans keep letting go, so it floats up into the sky somehow. Yeah ok. Do you know what a volcano is?
Vkothii 07-13-08, 08:26 PM Do you know what a volcano is?A volcano is a plutonic process. Tectonics, subduction of continental and oceanic plates, magma chambers and "hot-spots" that stay in the same place in the asthenosphere, and create mounds or plateaus of lava (like the Hawaiian island chain, or the central volcanic plateau in the North Island of NZ, e.g.), while the plates move around (because of the process of subduction pulling on the edges of plates), are the kinds of geological processes that volcanoes "emerge" from.
When a volcano erupts, it emits millions, sometimes billions, of tons of gases (including CO2, sulphates, and so on), and an eruption can last anything from a few hours to a few years. Also they emit lava, or molten rock, which cools and solidifies to provide a base for more molten lava to cool and solidify which creates a growing mound.
The volcanic extrusion of lava can build to considerable heights (like from the seafloor to several hundreds of metres above sealevel). They've been doing this sort of thing since the planet formed, presumably. The inverse of plutonics is the absorption of (mostly) CO2 by the oceans, and the planetary carbon cycle (not the biological one, which though it now has a significant impact on the overall planetary one, is very much a minor contribution).
So, I guess I don't really know all that much about what a volcano is, no.
