Greetings humans. This thread is intended to be a stickey of what members here consider to be the best Top 50 sci-fi series or films of all time. Each member may nominate a series or film, then when we've all chosen they shall be decided upon in a massive poll. At this point I would ask everyone give a description of why they believe their choice is worthy to be in the Top 50, I shall start. I nominate Babylon 5 While Star Trek originally dealt with a universe full of human-like life, or things which had human motivations, Babylon 5 went far beyond what we know of as life. This series was a brilliant idea that truly was lucky to have been realized, we should all be thankful that in a time where Sci-Fi was being ridiculed along came this wonderful series. I remember first seeing this and thinking "how boring, it's a soap opera" only later did I realize the nature of this story. It went beyond limits, beyond imagination, it was an actual SAGA of what might happen in the future an how we'd deal with it. There-to we find humanity is evil and arrogant, basically we are gerks. It was near the end of the first season I saw Babylon 5 for what it truly was, a miracle of storytelling, one that offered unique insights into science and mystery. I recall the strange motivations the aliens had in this series, the ideals and beliefs they possessed. What I most remember is The Shadows and Vorlons, these 2 species gave me a real look into evolutionary theory. I could hardly understand it at first, that each of these was devoted not to a god or religion, but to an idea, a concept, order or chaos. Amazing was hardly the word to describe it, breathtaking would be more like it. I always saught order and thought how great it would be to have everyone feel the same. Only when I saw what they became did I realize, order isn't the answer, niether is chaos, those ideas aren't the answer to anything. We saw how they caused more problems and created distances between the races. So all in all I'd say Babylon 5 definitely deserves a nomination, and so I cast my vote for that. I'm so thankful to have seen it all the way through as it aired, truly astonishing. Well done Babylon 5 Team!
I think Battlefield Earth was the best sci-fi movie ever of all time. Great plot line and the acting was second to none.
I don't argue with you, but is this a joke? Many said that movie was horrible but I thought it was descent and properly played out. So what is it, are you a liker or hater of this film. I honestly think it was descent, had an aura of fun, and was also an unexpected release.
Hmmm, thread title is "Movies and Films" (what's the difference between the two)... and you nominate a TV series. I didn't even try to watch Battlefield Earth - I tried reading the book: one of only two books in my life I've ever failed to finish. I couldn't stomach anything more than two chapters.
Definitely the more realistic plots of the Twilight Zone or Outer Limits. I'm less enamored with science fantasy like Star Trek, Babylon 5 and other series that bypass science. Gravity, General Relativity and so on are pushed aside by gobblygook. Dr Who is also a great series. Little pretension and a phone booth is no less realistic as a time travelling machine than the Enterprise and warp drive. The best movies are those on social commentary in the 'near' future without ignoring science: Farenheit 451, Handmaiden's Tale, 1984 and so on.
Jurassic Park Children of Men Star Wars Empire Strikes Back 28 Weeks Later Soylent Green Planet of the Apes The Matrix Alien X Files

dragonball Z in early response to your reply i say, so what its still a movie and has sci fi elements. peace.
I don't think you can nominate DBZ, it's not actually a real movie, it's not even a sci-fi series, it's a cartoon. Ya gotta pick something with real live people in it Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
