View Full Version : SciForums Member Collapse?
Prince_James 12-30-06, 08:25 PM So what is being done to remedy the fact that Sciforums members are dropping like flies? That people are fleeing, quite litterally, by the droves? And not our minor members, but some distinguished luminaries? That even a mod has now resigned?
We are losing the most valuable capital a board can have: It's prominent members.
What is being done?
invert_nexus 12-30-06, 08:27 PM Which?
I thought this was something that happened quite some time ago...
Do you have an idea on how to bring back such wonderful posters as the BigBlueHead?
That even a mod has now resigned?
You're a bit behind the times, I'm afraid.
Spurious changed his mind. He reacted a tad soon, you understand. There was a misunderstanding which was later cleared up.
I wonder if you're going to mention Superliminal, too? He, too, acted a tad prematurely.
Sauna is apparently leaving. Perhaps you mean him?
Tor is likely going to be permanently banned although she'll also likely be back in disguise.
Who else?
The Devil Inside is apparently quite perturbed and left a goodbye note. Is he the one you're referring to? He's a cool guy, sure enough, but by his own admission is more of a clown than a real contributing member.
Just who are you talking about?
§outh§tar 12-30-06, 09:15 PM He's talking about Medicine Woman.
.
Prince_James 12-30-06, 09:25 PM I didn't realize Spurious and Superluminal have changed their mind. However, that they were disturbed enough to consider it is still a problem.
Sauna leaving I could care less about.
But Medicine Woman is leaving?
MetaKron 12-30-06, 09:49 PM I've been disturbed enough to consider it a few times.
leopold99 12-30-06, 10:06 PM Just who are you talking about?
hercules rockefeller.
he left long ago.
Proud Muslim. Now HE was a character lol..
James R 12-30-06, 11:18 PM As long as we don't lose good members, I think we can afford to lose some prominent members. :)
Just kidding.
It's a new year starting tomorrow. At such times, many people re-evaluate their priorities, so it wouldn't surprise me if there's some turnover of membership.
The other major change around here lately has been the appointment of new moderators. People have decided to test the waters to see how far they can push moderators, both old and new. It will take a little while for people to work out what they can and cannot get away with.
Then there's the experimental system of general users' being able to hand out infractions, which can result in automatic banning. The entire sciforums community will take a while to get to grips with that.
Putting all the changes together, it will no doubt be too much for some people. So, some will leave. C'est la vie.
As long as people aren't leaving in droves, and we're getting new members signing up, I don't see a problem. And there is that thing about quality vs. quantity - but I don't want anybody taking that the wrong way.
People will do what they want to do.
Prince_James 12-30-06, 11:37 PM James R.:
Will you support a removal of such a feature if it proves problematic to continue with user infractions?
Also, new members singing up does not seem to be a solution to the problem, as many new members stay to post, at most, 100 or so times before leaving permanently. The member list is filled with people who have posted pitifully small amount of times.
But anyway...
If this trend continues, do you moderators and administration have any plan to perhaps rectify the situation?
James R 12-30-06, 11:45 PM PJ:
Will you support a removal of such a feature if it proves problematic to continue with user infractions?
Yes. I'll say right now that I'm not a big fan of it. But, I'm willing to give it a try and see whether it is workable or not.
Certainly, this gives the membership some real power and influence over the forum, and I can see some positives in that. However, I also bear in mind that whenever general members have been given power in the past they have tended to abuse it more often than not.
We'll see what happens this time.

I think you'll find the same is true of any internet forum of this kind. There is always a smallish core group of long-term members. Others drift in and out. I've seen it on several forums over the last 10 years.
If this trend continues, do you moderators and administration have any plan to perhaps rectify the situation?
No.
I don't see that there is a "situation", yet.
Prince_James 12-31-06, 12:24 AM Thanks for the answers James R.

But Medicine Woman is leaving?
*************
M*W: Well, that's news to me. I know TDI would like to see me leave. He thought he could run off all the atheists, so he spent a lot of time and effort giving infractions to me and the other atheists, and to basically anyone with whom he disagreed. It's gonna take more than that to make me leave sciforums.
redarmy11 12-31-06, 03:54 AM Yes, weird about TDI, that. I never realised he's such a Bible-basher.
And superluminal was a moderator, you say? When did this happen?
As for the changing membership: well, memberships change.. *shrug*
spuriousmonkey 12-31-06, 05:19 AM Yes, weird about TDI, that. I never realised he's such a Bible-basher.
I thought it was the opposite..an abortion-clinic firebomber!
but in reality he probably thought things were leaning too much towards the cold steel hearts of rational cold-blooded atheists.

You weren't always here?

5000 posts of utter and total spam, then he suddenly decides he's our reincarnated Messiah. Is he having a bit of a 'turn'?
You weren't always here?
No, but you were always awaiting my arrival.

It's never too late to embrace jesus.
No, but you were always awaiting my arrival.
let's thank the lord.
redarmy11 12-31-06, 06:05 AM It's never too late to embrace jesus.
I wouldn't want him to think I'm gay. You know what he does to gays.
Huh? What happened here in the last 24 hours?
Has everyone got nuts?
imaplanck. 12-31-06, 03:22 PM Yup weve started drinking cats out of cups .:)

invert_nexus 12-31-06, 03:29 PM Has everyone got nuts?
It's Space MADNESS!!!!
STIMPY: I'll turn off the gravity. It'll help you relax.
REN: What a pal. Ahhh. This is the good life. Just relax...and let my mind drift.
(Ren and water float out of the tub together) Yeahhhh. I'll just relax, and think pleasant thoughts...Chicken pot pie!...Chocolate-covered raisins!...Ehh...Glazed ham!...
(Ren drifts around the room) Heh...heh...heh...they think I'm CRAZY. But I know better. It is not *I* who am crazy. It is not I who am MAD! Didn'tcha hear 'em? Didn'tcha see the CROWDS?
(Ren holds up bar of soap)Oh my beloved ice cream bar (http://ourworld.cs.com/WeezelX/rs/my_beloved_icecreambar.au)...how I love to lick your creamy center! HOOOWWWWWW...(bites soap)...and your oh-so-nutty chocolate covering! You're not like the others...you like the same things I do! Waxed paper...boiled football leather...dog breath...We're not hitchhiking anymore! We're RIDING!
STIMPY: Stop it! You're talking crazy!
REN: (suddenly paranoid) Oh no, I know what YOU want. You coveteth my ICECREAM BAR!
STIMPY: C'mon now...
REN: No you don't! You can't take it from me now. I've had this ice-cream bar since I was a CHILD! People...always trying to take it from me! Why won't they LEAVE ME ALOOOOOONNNNE?
STIMPY: E...easy, now.
REN: Back off, man! (grabs toothbrush) Don't make me use this! One stop closer, I'm WARNING ya! Don't make me use it! (Stimpy steps closer) NOW you've done it. YOU FORCED ME TO USE IT!
(horrible sounds as Ren brushes his teeth. They struggle. Ren loses)

How about we go spam other boards and rob their members?
imaplanck. 12-31-06, 03:50 PM Hmmmm but wouldnt you say that current figure is somewhat meaningless due to the accumulation of old members that have left never to return, left on the the list.
spidergoat 12-31-06, 03:58 PM True. We need figures for active members plotted on a chart vs. time.

I keep wanting to help solve the thread, but I have no clue how to work with eigenvalues
Communist Hamster 12-31-06, 06:17 PM There need be no panic, good members join and leave all the time. The trouble is that one only notices it when they leave, because people with a low post count are not considered to be good members, on the whole, and one cannot tell a good member if that member hasn't posted much. Thus there is an illusion of "the good members leaving" when in fact there's a kind of equilibrium. Forums fail when there are more people leaving than are joining

What I'd like to know is, what percentage of the total am I?
What I'd like to know is, what percentage of the total am I?
1222/19687 = 6.207%
Stryder 12-31-06, 07:55 PM What I'd like to know is, what percentage of the total am I?
1222/19687 = 6.207%
Thats not entirely accurate, however it's really down to what figures you want to work with. For instance:
What is percentage of the total posts from Sciforums lifetime
At the time I looked 1,171,015 posts exist (This number grows daily)
Of which 2,907 posts by Tablariddim (Again at the time I looked)
1171015/2907=402.82593739250085999312005503956
This means Tablariddim has nearly 1/403rdth of the total posts.
However this is a Fraction not an actual Percentage.
100/402.82593739250085999312005503956=0.24824617959633 309564779272682249%
The Percentage is about 0.25% of the Total post, although the above calculations answer is more accurate.
(Correct me if I'm wrong with the calc, I've succumb to atrophy)
If you were to work out the Percentage of posts from an Average day, well thats where the mathematics gets interesting and more input needs to be known. Questions would be asked like:
When the forums was started? (what date)
How many days have occured since that date?
Whats the daily post average? (Total posts/Total days)
Whats Tablariddim's Post per Day average? (I know the profile has one version, however it's brief at only two decimal places.)
Okay my response might seem excessive, but occasionally I like to get my grey matter working since it usually ends up like Mash potato from overgaming.
Thats not entirely accurate, however it's really down to what figures you want to work with.
Yea, I remember hearing that Dave used to clear out old accounts with zero posts. I was just basing that number on her account number and the total number of accounts.
Sadly, I have double the posts and I'm around 64% :(
spuriousmonkey 01-01-07, 03:18 AM The Percentage is about 0.25% of the Total post, although the above calculations answer is more accurate.
that would mean i am close to 1.4% of the total. :o

 Huh? how come OCTOber has a minus value?
spuriousmonkey 01-01-07, 03:23 AM James deleted so many posts in october.
imaplanck. 01-01-07, 03:25 AM :D Jesus
spuriousmonkey 01-01-07, 03:28 AM they were all yours.
imaplanck. 01-01-07, 03:31 AM I can undertand the frenzied jealousy.:p
tablariddim 01-01-07, 04:28 AM What I meant was what percentage of all the members am I? Now, I'm a useless mathematician but I've worked out that each member is roughly 0.05% of the total. I'm probably way out.

And you should all be perfectly aware that mob rule encourages one-sidedness otherwise known as narrow-mindedness otherwise known as provincialism otherwise known as bigotry otherwise known as BORE-ing.
spuriousmonkey 01-01-07, 05:08 AM Or you call it democracy and point out the civilized aspects of it.
Meanwhile, 01-01-07, 05:26 AM Well we're not talking about a democratic system, Spurious, whereby candidates have platforms and airtime to explain their actions, or suspected offenders are counseled via a system of law that will try them under a mantel of justice.
Call a witness: my psychoanalyst: I'm innocent!

Meanwhile, 01-01-07, 05:58 AM Of course in a democracy politicians hanker to win mob rule on their side. It's surprisingly easy to do too. All you have to do is pander.
invert_nexus 01-01-07, 06:59 AM and I don't support it.
I don't think anybody does. Everybody that I know that has voiced an opinion on the subject would prefer that the infraction system go bye bye.

Nice to know not everyone here is of the everybody.
Syzygys 01-01-07, 07:40 AM Actually the daily reach in the last 16 months was pretty much the same according to Alexa:
http://alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=sciforums.com
So maybe it is just a feeling...
P.S.: The 3 mons average is up in rankings...
Meanwhile, 01-01-07, 07:56 AM That chart represents traffic only. It's when they get out of their cars and start walking around... poking their fingers into this and that, clicking pretty icons like that hard-to-miss RED infraction icon, unable to resist their base natures...
Syzygys 01-01-07, 08:10 AM I know, but if we get the same traffic with less members, what does it say??? Either more interesting/readable posts, or more addicted posters....
Meanwhile, 01-01-07, 08:33 AM The infraction tool is yet one more homogenizing method to quell diversity. And our resident savant calls that democracy...
glaucon 01-02-07, 03:39 PM The infraction tool is yet one more homogenizing method to quell diversity. And our resident savant calls that democracy...
Indeed.
The sad beginning of the demise....
What is being done?
you remain unaffected?
must rectify
soon :)
