View Full Version : SciForums Encyclopedia
Plazma Inferno! 03-03-07, 07:08 AM Dear SciForums members!
SciForums Encyclopedia is now available to you!
It use same form as Wikipedia, and it will be used for information about forum and its members.
Access link for SF Encyclopedia is:
http://www.sciforums.com/encyclopedia (www.sciforums.com/encyclopedia)
Also, you're be able to access it via link on the SF main page.
To access and to contribute to the SF Encyclopedia, you have to register. I suggest that you use your current forum name for encyclopedia too.
Many of you had chance to work with Wiki system. For those who hadn't, there is useful link:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:FAQ
Also, ENC tags are now available when you want to put direct links to the Encyclopedia in your posts. You could link it on existing topics in Encyclopedia, or you could create new topics based on particular word in your post.
This is an example of using ENC tags:
http://www.sciforums.com/uploads/encyc_linking.gif
And, that would be look like this in the post:
http://www.sciforums.com/uploads/encyc_preview.gif
Where the 'AMD' link lead you on the Encyclopedia page that contains topic about 'AMD'.
But first, we must input some content in the Encyclopedia.
So, you could post here your suggestions about Encyclopedia's Main Page and possible categories that could be add.
Cheers!
Singularity 03-03-07, 07:31 AM Its greate to know the SciForums is working on changes but its falling miserably on an important feature thats taking the world by storm , this one

invert_nexus 03-03-07, 12:40 PM Wes should be proud to know that he's the subject of the very first (and at present only) article on the new wiki.
Wesdom
Killjoy 03-03-07, 01:03 PM `
hmmm...
That almost looks like a signpost on the road to...
Well...
I'm an old so-and-so, and a lazy one to boot.
Probably a good thing - the latter characteristic, anyway - as what the aforementioned article prompted me to think of was an entry on the "goat-humpers" thing which meandered thru these environs a bit ago.
Perhaps one on the "Lost / Golden Age" of sciforums...
"...a time before the arguments got truly styoopid, and the advent of Unrestricted Trolling...
A Halcyon Epoch before the Invasion of the Mod-Force, and the ceaseless "reform" oriented clamp-downs...
When Titans of pettiness rather than petty titans sauntered the now greytoned halls of the buzz-saw logo'd and "rebranded" for'm, lashing out with unbridled ('cos there wer'n't a battalion O' Mod-bods) ferocity at whomever dared utter a peep of contradiction to their Nigh-Divine proclaimations on the nature of the universe...
Now - the blood of Numenor is spent...
I mean- uhhh...
You get the picture...
spuriousmonkey 03-03-07, 01:13 PM But first, we must input some content in the Encyclopedia.
So, you could post here your suggestions about Encyclopedia's Main Page and possible categories that could be add.
Biology: evolution

spuriousmonkey 03-03-07, 01:29 PM Hmmm...
regeneration
Nikelodeon 03-03-07, 01:31 PM Test. Who the hell is responsible for phonetic?

vslayer 03-03-07, 11:25 PM hmm, does it have an index anywhere?
The Devil Inside 03-03-07, 11:35 PM man..im seriously resisting the urge to vandalize that wiki.
*restrains himself*
there should be a feature that hides the encyclopedia from view until you have 100 posts (a reasonable benchmark of activity and dedication to the forum itself).
i know people that would search for links like that to vandalize beyond all repair.
vslayer 03-04-07, 12:05 AM i think we need to liven up the main page. add the logo or something
Killjoy 03-04-07, 12:12 AM
The Sciforums logo is on the main page.
James R 03-04-07, 12:41 AM This should be interesting...
Not a bad idea. I just hope it doesn't turn into a flame-fest.
Killjoy 03-04-07, 01:14 AM `
Forgone conclusion, in'nit ?
:D
spuriousmonkey 03-04-07, 01:47 AM i know people that would search for links like that to vandalize beyond all repair.
You can always revert back to an old version of the page if I am not mistaken.
spuriousmonkey 03-04-07, 04:33 AM People...why are you not making something nice on our wiki?
Better check it out. Your name might already be there. Here is the index of all pages.
http://www.sciforums.com/encyclopedia/Special:Allpages
spuriousmonkey 03-04-07, 06:36 AM We can't upload pictures to the wiki. That means that this might lead to gaps in the articles.
Athelwulf 03-04-07, 07:16 AM I didn't see this thread until now. Amazing. Thanks Plazma! :D
Also, that ENC thingy is really spiffy. I saw it before while making a post today and was all "What the fuck is that?" and didn't want to click it to find out. Way to be creative with the software!
We can't upload pictures to the wiki. That means that this might lead to gaps in the articles.
I noticed earlier that there's no direct link to the upload page. But are you sure the required page is there, but hidden somewhere? I haven't checked, but seeing as many of the other pages don't have direct links laying around where they're easily found, it wouldn't surprise me.
EDIT: Oh, I see what you mean now — it's disabled. Plazma, please enable it!
Athelwulf 03-04-07, 07:24 AM I have encountered an odd glitch in the software. When I tried making an article for the Art & Culture subforum, it made an article called "Art" that had no content whatsoever. Apparently the ampersand breaks something.
I've worked around this by making these pages redirects to articles with the titles modified (Art and Culture). But it really annoys me. And it's not listed at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_%28technical_restrict ions%29) as a known technical restriction in article names.
Can this be fixed?
spuriousmonkey 03-04-07, 02:29 PM I put a shitload of content in it today. Maybe other people feel inspired by this and will do the same.
invert_nexus 03-04-07, 02:35 PM "I put a shitload of content in it today. Maybe other people feel inspired by this and will do the same."
(I will try to put some real content up at some point. Scout's Honor.)
spuriousmonkey 03-04-07, 02:38 PM Follow the link. ;)
invert_nexus 03-04-07, 02:39 PM Hey.
I tried putting one in, but when I went to User Manual thingy it took me to the REAL wikipedia...
Here's what I was going to make it say:
"Shitload is an American [citation needed] slang term meaning "a lot". Often used by primates as they have a feces-flinging fetish."
spuriousmonkey 03-04-07, 02:45 PM just type in shitload or any word at the search bar on the front page. You will get an option to create an article if it isn't there yet.
invert_nexus 03-04-07, 02:50 PM Heh. Yeah. I know. I learned that from the user manual.
Did it. Made the article. Linked to it here. Then clicked the link and it didn't say anything....
Tried figuring out what the hell was going on and realized that I had tried making the page on the real wiki not our wiki....
I actually saw the page for a minute, not sure if it was deleted or if it never actually saved because I wasn't logged in.
Ooops.
wesmorris 03-04-07, 03:38 PM Wes should be proud to know that he's the subject of the very first (and at present only) article on the new wiki.
Wesdom
awe shucks. :P
Athelwulf 03-04-07, 04:13 PM A handful of members here now have articles on them, a lot of them created last night by me and spurious. You can see them in this category: Category:SciForums members
Most of 'em are just little stubbies, but they're yours. Note that if you register an account at the wiki, you have a personal user page in the user namespace, which is different from these encyclopedic articles in the main namespace. Compare Athelwulf with User:Athelwulf.
Oh, and you guys can be link happy if you'd like. That's what I did most of last night, made so much shit wikified it's crazy. Most of this is the fruit of my labor: Special:Mostlinked
And I set up my own personal list of essential links that I want and aren't in the sidebars at User:Athelwulf#Quick_links. You can copy the wiki marked-up text to your own user pages when you get around to making your accounts.
And we're not limited to stuff about SciForums. Spurious has a bunch of science articles, such as evolution and stem cell. And I've started theory.
Have fun. :D
invert_nexus 03-04-07, 05:27 PM I noticed that when I enclosed a word with a period after it in the enc tags it couldn't find the page. Shouldn't there be a way to strip the period or send to a search page or something?
I see my boobs have preceded me there.:bugeye:
invert_nexus 03-04-07, 05:36 PM Oh?
Samcdkey.
Muahahahahaha!!!
That really is a good picture.
See, Sam, you should have just left your boobs up. The legend only grows with each passing day.
Oh?
Samcdkey.
Muahahahahaha!!!
That really is a good picture.
See, Sam, you should have just left your boobs up. The legend only grows with each passing day.
It would be a crushing blow to post them now.
They've taken on a life of their own in the imaginations of the forum.:D
Athelwulf 03-04-07, 06:13 PM I noticed that when I enclosed a word with a period after it in the enc tags it couldn't find the page. Shouldn't there be a way to strip the period or send to a search page or something?
The trick is to keep extraneous stuff like punctuation marks outside of the tags.
I see my boobs have preceded me there.:bugeye:
Spurious seemed to insist that they be posted.
Spurious seemed to insist that they be posted.
I guess its a good intro to my personality.
leopold99 03-04-07, 06:51 PM i started a page on cato.
Athelwulf 03-04-07, 07:13 PM I started one on Fraggle Rocker.
James R 03-05-07, 12:06 AM Is TeX integrated with the encylopaedia?
With the wikipedia, you can include equations like:
E = mc^2
by enclosing TeX code in <math></math> tags.
But right now, that doesn't seem to work...
Is this easy to fix, Plazma Inferno! (?) If so, could you get it up and running?
vslayer 03-05-07, 01:08 AM first vandalism attacks made by hugh jass. cleanup in progress
spuriousmonkey 03-05-07, 03:15 AM don't clean it all up. Some of it was quite funny a la sciforums style.
Plazma Inferno! 03-05-07, 03:42 AM Guys you rock! :bravo:
Sorry for late respond! We'll check all the glitches and fix them if it's possible.
Also, there will be lot of vandals and spammers, so feel free to eliminate them and their content.
spuriousmonkey 03-05-07, 04:21 AM It's going quite nice with the wiki.
I'm trying to focus on making somewhat bigger articles. Such as Wesdom and regeneration. And I made a shitload of small stuff to fill in blanks, but they need more attention.
Ok I put the Science subforum and added the Science and Society subforum with a few blank topics.
I also added an FAQ for Islam.
Any suggestions and recommendations are welcome.
If there are any particular topics you would like me to work on, please let me know.
thats great, another one.
Two more starter topic pages on Hinduism and India.
spidergoat 03-05-07, 05:47 PM Just added an entry on Buffalo Roam.
We should have one on Kiwi too.:p
Also we should have a sciforums dictionary page.
For terms created here: like snotwuh, WWAD, etc.
leopold99 03-05-07, 07:31 PM For terms created here: like snotwuh, WWAD, etc.
i created both pages if anyone wants to add to them.
leopold99 03-05-07, 09:55 PM question:
how do you make clickable words?
for example on the ron harvey page i added see avatarism.
i would like to click on avatarism and go to that page.
Done.
Ron Harvey
avatarism
Select the word and then click on the Ab link
leopold99 03-05-07, 10:01 PM Select the word and then click on the Ab link
hey man, thanks.
redarmy11 03-06-07, 12:46 AM 'Ron Harvey' was never a member of Sciforums (as far as I'm aware without going to the extraordinary lengths of looking it up).
He initially joined under the name perplexity, then changed it to his present incarnation Sauna.
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 01:06 AM 'Ron Harvey' was never a member of Sciforums (as far as I'm aware without going to the extraordinary lengths of looking it up).
He initially joined under the name perplexity, then changed it to his present incarnation Sauna.
I think that this last name was a well kept 'secret'.
redarmy11 03-06-07, 01:07 AM Oh, was it? :p
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 01:09 AM Yes. I guess someone has to change the page. Are you going to do it?
redarmy11 03-06-07, 01:12 AM Dunno. Might do. Sometime.
[Waits.]
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 01:13 AM I did some of it
Ron Harvey
redarmy11 03-06-07, 01:14 AM Well done. An extremely well-thought-out contribution. I don't see how I could top that.
spidergoat 03-06-07, 01:16 AM Is this going to be a compendium of personal information that we happened to reveal at one time or another?
Nikelodeon 03-06-07, 01:19 AM Yes, Jack.
redarmy11 03-06-07, 01:24 AM I did some of it
Ron Harvey
Removed repetition.
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 01:27 AM changed it completely.
redarmy11 03-06-07, 01:30 AM Is this going to be a compendium of personal information that we happened to reveal at one time or another?
Ooh. Ron... is that you?
Do you mean "what is this non-science-related personal information doing in a so-called 'Science Encylopedia [sic]'"?
I dunno, Sir. No-one's written a Mission Statement (http://www.sciforums.com/encyclopedia/Science_Encyclopedia:About) yet. Confusion reigns as to whether it's a 'Science Encyclopedia [sic]' (in which case the Ron Harvey-related content isn't valid) or a Sciforums wiki (in which case it is).
Someone ought to decide, and shortly.
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 01:31 AM I was wondering about the same thing. I naively started writing science articles but then noticed nobody else was.
vslayer 03-06-07, 01:44 AM its a sciforums wiki, but scientific articles are welcome.
Prince_James 03-06-07, 02:32 AM http://www.sciforums.com/encyclopedia/Prince_james
That someone made this? Makes me feel happy inside.
leopold99 03-06-07, 02:34 AM http://www.sciforums.com/encyclopedia/Prince_james
That someone made this? Makes me feel happy inside.
yes. yours truely.
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 02:41 AM http://www.sciforums.com/encyclopedia/Prince_james
That someone made this? Makes me feel happy inside.
You can just say Prince_james.
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 02:52 AM Interestingly research has shown that the best pages on wikipedia are those that have been edited by a large group of diverse people.
invert_nexus 03-06-07, 03:28 AM Ya know, Perplexity wasn't banned because of a flame war but because he couldn't stop obsessing over a certain aqueous someone someone... Yes?
(I wonder if we'll ever start using discussion pages?)
As to content, I imagine it'll be mixed.
Science related (and other topical... topics) will accumulate, but at a slower pace than the glorious glorious soap.
Oh. And the funnies.
leopold99 03-06-07, 03:36 AM Ya know, Perplexity wasn't banned because of a flame war but because he couldn't stop obsessing over a certain aqueous someone someone... Yes?
i don't know, i believe it was because he was a ah, um, nevermind.
we need a page on asshat.
leopold99 03-06-07, 03:44 AM who is hugh jass?
leopold99 03-06-07, 03:46 AM (I wonder if we'll ever start using discussion pages?)
that's what sciforums is for isn't it?
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 03:54 AM Discussion pages are in use.
invert_nexus 03-06-07, 04:01 AM Shouldn't there be a page on that then?
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 04:17 AM what do you mean?
http://www.sciforums.com/encyclopedia/Talk:Main_Page
Nikelodeon 03-06-07, 04:17 AM Shouldn't there be a page on that then?
A page on discussion pages?
I did some of it
Ron Harvey
Changed page Perplexity
Added intros to some of the topics on Science and Society
what do you mean?
http://www.sciforums.com/encyclopedia/Talk:Main_Page
Might it not be better to discuss here? So even those not using the wiki can get an idea of whats going on?
Is this going to be a compendium of personal information that we happened to reveal at one time or another?
Thats something to consider, especially since editing it out in the wiki will not eliminate it, just consign it to a previous version of the page.
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 05:41 AM How is it personal if the information is public?
Added stuff to Science and Society and the page on Cris.
Prince_James 03-06-07, 07:24 AM You guys just gave SamCDKey another thing to do besides hate America! ;)
You guys just gave SamCDKey another thing to do besides hate America! ;)
I'm just starting pages so its easier for you guys to fill in.
Buck up buster, there is work to be done!:D
sciwiki is fun!

thanks.. I never noticed that thread...
Surprising, since we are both posting in it.:D
leopold99 03-06-07, 09:11 AM our encyclopedia is growing by leaps and bounds.
30 articles have been added in the last 12 hours.
I like the way sciwiki is becoming.
There is no use copying Wikipedia, and it is a nice representation of the Sciforums universe.
p.s. I think more members should be lured in there.
spuriousmonkey 03-06-07, 02:22 PM It certainly is a sciforums wiki at the moment. I like it.
spidergoat 03-06-07, 02:50 PM How is it personal if the information is public?
I mean if all our personal information was compiled in one place, it might be that much easier for someone to figure out our true identity, to use it in arguments, and for stalking.
redarmy11 03-06-07, 03:00 PM
Nikelodeon 03-06-07, 03:01 PM
spidergoat 03-06-07, 03:13 PM I hate you guys.
redarmy11 03-06-07, 03:18 PM Love and respect flows out to you in equal measure.
Redefine91 03-06-07, 03:24 PM aight I just put my name but I won't go above and beyond.
Redarmys was pretty funny.
Changed page Perplexity
I figured out it was Ron looooong before redarmy.
PS, this is a really hilarious wiki.
Who added the stuff about pee drinking?
Will there be a page on it?
Q) is a member of SciForums and the moderator of Astronomy, Exobiology, & Cosmology.
He is a militant atheist, and has the sort of mentality that would easily lend to mob behavior. Pastimes involve reading the religion section and masturbating, killing kittens with lawn mowers, and amateur porn (which he enjoys for purely academic reasons).
Was that tor?
I figured out it was Ron looooong before redarmy.
Good for you Roman.

James R 03-06-07, 06:47 PM I've added important entries on topiary, origami and arms.
I tooled around on there. It's not the sort of thing I ever see myself adding anything to, ever.
Detracting, though....
leopold99 03-07-07, 12:42 AM i've added a number of "wanted" pages but when i saved them they weren't the pages i typed.
one example is intelligence and machines. it defaulted to intelligence and said the page hasn't been created yet.
It's becoming an "Encyclopedia America"......
Nikelodeon 03-07-07, 07:07 AM It's becoming an "Encyclopedia America"......
Therefore becoming the greatest Encyclopedia of all time.

Orleander 09-09-07, 02:55 PM can someone start a page in the encyclopedia about acronyms
like SHTF or TEOTWAWKI. I see some here that I don't have a clue about.
How about if we call the article "Necronyms" (Net Acronyms)? Sure, it would be false advertising for those obsessed with the dead, but what is netspeak, anyway, aside from the language of zombies?

USS Athens 02-12-08, 04:33 PM Anyone interesting in making a template, I can help.
My first template is a time chart. Type in {{Time nav|x|y}} into the bottem of any year article to produce a last year and next year table.
For example, you do an article on the year 2000, and you want the Time navigation template. Put {{Time nav|1999|2001}} into the end of the article. Then when you read the article it will read...
Last Year: 1999 Next Year: 2001

USS Athens 03-20-08, 11:16 PM New picture frames!
To use it, just use it like a template. For example, say you want a picture on the right, you first type in the template name (in this case 'img.r'), then put the URL of the image. Lastly, you can put a caption in the final slot (if not just put a space instead). It should look something like this...
{{img.r|http://www.sciforums.com/avatars/avatar21822_88.gif|Draqon's avatar}}
On the encyclopedia it will appear as...
http://www.imagehosting.com/out.php/i1644310_encyclo.JPG
NOTE: All of these picture frames act as tables, meaning they will interfere with text (though sometimes it can look good with the text and the image mingled together)
Other codes...
{{img.l|http://www.image.jpg|Caption}} Left image
{{img|http://www.image.jpg|Caption}} Center image
{{img.r|http://www.image.jpg|Caption}} Right image
Non-Table Frames
{{img.f|http://www.image.jpg|Caption}} Left-fixed frame that does not interfere with the text
Plazma Inferno! 03-21-08, 06:24 AM Thank you for the effort USS Enterprise.
QuarkHead 03-21-08, 04:21 PM Dim as I am, I have only just discovered the encyclopedia. What is for? The content appears to be, well, non-content, really.
Shouldn't an encyclopedia have informative content, articles, explanations etc., rather than just being an extension of the cesspool?
I would be willing to help build it as a knowledge base, but only if it is intended as such. Someone please explain what's going on here!

Obviously you have not seen:
Encyclopedia Dramatica (http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Main_Page)
uncyclopedia (http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)
or all the other "wikis (http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Wiki)" on the internets (http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Internets)
By the way I want to thank draqon for starting my article.
USS Athens 03-21-08, 08:12 PM Thank you for the effort USS Enterprise.
I'm now going to start converting images so that they have frames.
