clusteringflux 04-09-08, 08:06 AM Why does it look like the architects/designers are smoking crack?
Asguard 04-09-08, 08:08 AM i have to agree, that first pic looks like something out of the jetsons. Im not sure if its just the photo or not but it looks like the whole district is floating in the air
clusteringflux 04-09-08, 08:13 AM It's a drawing.
Why does it look like the architects/designers are smoking crack?
Probably they are!:D
But its cool. I really liked what they did with Jeddah and I cannot wait to see how all these turn out!
The al Jawaraha in Jeddah

And the proposed Mile Tower (http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/9283/diagramfa3.jpg) also in Jeddah
Its a seaport so they want tall buildings
Asguard 04-09-08, 08:16 AM ok drawing then
ok drawing then
I think its just the effect created because of the way the flyovers are aligned.
cosmictraveler 04-09-08, 09:06 AM Very nice designs but are those buildings environmentally green and using solar power or other types of clean energy?

It's Saudi Arabia! Oil is nearly free. what do you think?
cosmictraveler 04-09-08, 09:12 AM It's Saudi Arabia! Oil is nearly free. what do you think?
One day there might not be any oil besides it would save them money in the long run and saving money is a very good thing in any society. :)
clusteringflux 04-09-08, 09:16 AM I doubt they're worried about the oil drying up.

I agree but having green buildings would be a nice thing to do to show that they are trying to help the Earth. :)

Not free. They pay almost (http://www.allbusiness.com/agriculture-forestry-fishing-hunting/support-activities/3950686-1.html) one riyal a gallon.:p
But they are involved in research in alternate energy and nuclear energy ;)
Secretary Bodman also toured the King Abdul-Aziz City for Science and Technology, which is the home of nuclear and alternative energy research for Saudi Arabia.
They'll probably turn completely to nuclear energy in a year or two
How Soon Will Saudi Arabia Turn to Nuclear Energy? (http://ezinearticles.com/?How-Soon-Will-Saudi-Arabia-Turn-to-Nuclear-Energy?&id=198632)
Syzygys 04-09-08, 10:16 AM These buildings gonna burn pretty when the revolution comes...
clusteringflux 04-09-08, 10:17 AM These buildings gonna burn pretty when the revolution comes...
So, who would be the rebels in that revolution?
These buildings gonna burn pretty when the revolution comes...
I can tell you've never been to Saudi Arabia. :D
Carcano 04-13-08, 12:21 AM Damn near appalling...all of it.
Architecture has become a competition to see who can most efficiently express the malaise of modernity.
Neurosis personified...in steel and stone.
Syzygys 04-13-08, 10:45 AM So, who would be the rebels in that revolution?
I dunno. Maybe those few millions young citizens whose standard of life is fastly degrading???
Syzygys 04-13-08, 10:46 AM I can tell you've never been to Saudi Arabia. :D
I can tell you know shit about history, economy and politics....

Evidence? Sure, you are a poor Saudi, who just lost his job and part of the 20% unemployed, while there are 5 millions foreigners in the country and see the 6000 princes building these magnifficent buildings using the country's oilwealth and in the bed with the great Satan, the USA. Sure I would LOVE them too...

Ah the poor Saudi, who gets welfare (http://www.arabianbusiness.com/515679-saudi-largest-donor-to-10bn-poverty-reduction-fund?ln=en), free education and free healthcare in an economy where gas costs 90 halalas (which is an extreme and recent rise from the 75 halalas it used to cost), food is dirt cheap and everyone gets a plot of land and US $80,000 from the king (most of which are pardoned if they cannot be paid back) and jobs wherever the government can place them regardless of ability or education? Not to mention the zakat provided annually by the well off? Hmm lets see.
What would I, the poor Saudi do?
Vinyard 04-13-08, 08:05 PM And why can't the saudis do someting about terrorism?
Vinyard 04-13-08, 08:05 PM Considering you know, that most of the 911 terrorists came from Saudi Arabia
guthrie 04-14-08, 07:26 AM I doubt they're worried about the oil drying up.
I think you'll find that they are, due to a rising population and stagnating oil production.
Homyrrh 05-07-08, 08:25 PM Yeah, actually the VERY REASON they're constructing these outlandish structures is to offset the inevitable financial losses from the gravely dwindling oil reserves with big money from tourism.
NatGeo had some program about the design, construction and decoration of the six-star Dubai hotel; intriguing...actually pulled it off, though wasn't nearly as challenging as these look.
