Well, they caught the guy that made the Sasser worm. Check him out, claiming to be some kind of saint. I only wanted to wipe out Netsky.

Funny how they make a big deal of a computer that he made himself. Makes it sound like he created the motherboard from scratch or something (I'd be impressed if he did, but I doubt it). Anybody can make their own computer. It ain't rocket science.

Too bad it's still out there though. There have been quite a few people in sciforums who have come down with this lately. Make a note, update, update, UPDATE!!!

And look at that, he got turned in by his buddies. Money talks, bullshit walks.

By the way, if anyone here has it; here's some links to help you out:

I don't think they were referring to the computer. I think they were talking about the source code he made.

Anyway, it's a good thing that people actually get caught for doing this.

If so, the guy has pretty bad grammar to be a journalist.

We found the source code on a computer he had made by himself,
    or
We found the source code he had made by himself on a computer,

Do these sentences mean the same thing?

I looked into a german newspaper, there they stated that the source code was selfmade, not the computer. Perhaps the translator did a bad job?

While messing about with WinMX file sharing software I foolishly disabled my firewall and got infected by te damn thing. It took me a while to figure out what was shutting my PC down as it had recently been reformatted. In the greater scheme of things my PC is nothing but if this virus had shut down air traffic control computers then people could have been killed. Perhaps a stiff 5 year jail sentence may just send the right signals to these clowns who write viruses, bloody microsoft software is buggy enough and prone to crashing without anyone dding to the confusion. (However I do like XP - so far my PC hasn't crashed).....

I think it is MS in the first place who should place more thought into security not world monopoly ideas.
It's just because of their ultra-non-secure operating systems, that such things happen. and of course much blame goes to the users who don't update their systems regulary (or at least put a decent firewall)
even windows can be made at least partially secure, if some user-end intelligent thought is put into it's defence capabilities

p.s. nowadays you're a suicidal data killer if you don't run a firewall

Actually there are intensions to toughen up on people that do these viruses. Originally it was seen that most virus writers however were under the age of being tried as adults, which meant there wasn't much any of the legal systems could do.

As for shutting down Air Traffic control, they should really be PLC systems (Sculptured perposely for the task and of course non commercial), however as you know with the world the effects of monopolisation and the cheapness of programmers using well known coding causes the programs to be created in compatible software/OS's.

However Air Traffic Control was just one of the many things that "The L0pht" brought into topic more than 5 years ago and how hackers could evole. (Admittedly not virus writers but the same conditions apply)

This story is getting some mixed coverage...

One news site says this guy is the creator of the Netsky virus as well. Another says he was trying to wipe out Netsky. Anotehr says he released a new version of Sasser just last week.

One thing that was certain is that the German people are proud of this guy as he has made fools of many worldwide experts.

One question, If he's german, why does it's source code look like it was scripted in English? I mean areas like:
    Code:
printf("[.] you should have a listener on %s:%d.\n",.....

Shouldn't that be written in German?

if I were a virii writer I'd also write in english not latvian
just because latvian language has many special characters, that would make it harder to write and use correct computer terminology
    --
german is simmilar , but of course with not so many special characters
    --
english is the computer terminology backbone
I often think in english when discussing technological matters

Maybe it was the Queen that did it...explains a lot of things.

I agree with Avatar. English is pretty much the default user and coding style so it would seem logical to create a virus using code in english.

English is the worlds universal language you know

According to a Babelfish translation, the only special character in that circumstance was รถ, then again the translation might be different from how it would be written.

I suppose multilinguals must think in what ever language is easiest to communicate in, and if the actual code was being worked on by some of his associates to, I'm sure they are more than likely to communicate in English.

You can bet his home PC is being well and truly stripped back at some Laboratory for gaining intelligence on what information has been deleted. (or stored in Temporary files)

I wander how much porn will be found. So Stryder, what do you think they will find?

Also, that is very true. it would seem logical to use the same language as the people you're trying to get. BUT, he claims he was doing it to help his mothers business (PC Help! Pretty much repairing computers) so that would mean he'd have to infect German computers...so wouldn't it have been easier to have done it in German if that was true?

well, you both are natural english speakers, so it might seem odd to you (thinking in other language, building code in other language), but in reality it's very common here in Latvia, and I bet germany also.
One of the main reasons being - all computer terminology is in english and most translations in other languages really suck

I would also write a virus or whatever on English, and I am from Germany. In school we learned programming with english programms, so I would prefer writing codes/programmes in this language.

Yeah, right. I had to programm on German once, it really sounded strange. If I talk about computers I use a very high amount of english words.
