View Full Version : Saddest Place in the World?
Pick the saddest place in the world.
Rules:
-It has to be an actual place. Don't give BS about emotions
-Can be a country, state, city or whatever. You don't need to give the gps positioning, but be specific
-Why?
I'd have to go with North Korea. Starvation, communism, and an uncomfortable climate for those who can't afford heat(most people).
dixonmassey 10-25-04, 08:04 PM Detroit as well as any "deindustrialized" city of the deserted buildings and plants. People lived, worked there and now it's just a ghost town full of trouble in the places previously full of life (at least 50 years ago).
sargentlard 10-25-04, 10:10 PM Sudan. It has never seen happines....starvation, disease, death.
Practically all of Africa.
Hydrabad, India: 4-8 year olds kids and 60 old lepers being pushed by their spouses crowd the street begging for even small morsels of food. You help one, they tell everyhomeless begger in the street and soon you're surrounded by helplessness.
vslayer 10-26-04, 02:38 AM everywhere except america, becuase of america
gendanken 10-26-04, 05:17 PM Switzerland.
Where one can't even walk down the street with a paper cut without its native softies calling the ambulance.
A land filled with happy, loving, blonde-ish nightmares.
cosmictraveler 10-26-04, 06:08 PM It is where you live. To me anyone that must ask this question must be in a place they think is very sad because your looking to find others to join your company to see that they are like you , saddness loves company they say.
cosmictraveler 10-26-04, 08:40 PM Ridicule, they say, is only showing your own insecurities.

Cosmictraveler,
It is where you live. To me anyone that must ask this question must be in a place they think is very sad because your looking to find others to join your company to see that they are like you , saddness loves company they say.
Don't be a dumbass. The idea for this thread came from one on the weezer.com message boards with the exact same title, (but a different question). I consider Calgary to be amongst the best cities in the world.
Now, is there a place which you consider really crappy?
cosmictraveler 10-27-04, 10:32 PM The Black Hole of Calcutta.
Auschwitz, Volgograd, and Nanjing. Their memories before and during WW2 were the coldest moments in human history.
dixonmassey 10-28-04, 01:38 AM Not really, Auschwitz, Volgograd, and Nanjing were not the places where the most lives were lost during WWII.
Real places of Sorrow:
Area around Kiev (circa fall 1941. Now Ukraine). Do not know how many hundreds of thousands of soviets were killed there (those were lucky ones) but 1,000,000 of soviet troops were taken prisoners there. Most of the prisoners were starved to death in 1941/42.
Kiev again but in 1943; >600,000 soviet troops, unknown tens of thousands of freshly drafted civilians have been killed to liberate Kiev from Germans; I think, the place with the highest (in the entire human history) number of troops killed per square meter of battlefield is located near Kiev.
Area around Kharkov (now Ukraine, circa 1942) -roughly 500,000 prisoners + who knows how many killed on the soviet side. Roughly, 70-80% of soviet POWs died in captivity vs. 3% dead among American POW (feel the difference).
Area around Rzhev (now Russia, circa 1942) - roughly 1.5-2 millions soviets troops killed + hundreds of thousands prisoners (almost the same as dead).
Leningrad (now, Petersburg, 1941-44). Nobody knows exactly, but roughly 3 millions of soviet troops/civilians were killed/starved/frozen to death in the areas around Leningrad.
France/Germany (circa 1945) - Western Allies starved to death (+ deceases) roughly 1 million of German prisoners of war (payback time?).
-------------------------------------------------------
The most terrible places to be in 20 th century (as for me)
Ukraine (circa 1931-33) - 7 millions peasants were deliberately starved to death by Soviet regime in order to have enough of grain to buy western technology/plants/equipment/engineers/etc.
China (1960th) - Cultural revolution -20 millions starved to death. Nobody knows how many more many were killed/worked to death/etc.
-----------------------------------------------------------
In Europe, Ukraine is #1 "saddest place" of XXth century by far.[/

Gravity 10-28-04, 08:27 AM I guess it depends on definition of ''sad''. Certainly by death/starvation/torture issues - no place in the USA qualify's. But as a subthread - how about rating by unhappiness, cultural vacuum, self-destructive behavior, nasty attitude towards self and others.
If we are talking USA - I pick New Jersey (never even been there, but having worked in tourist industry in various parts of the USA - visitors from NJ pretty consistantly stand out as some of the most neurotic and miserable SOB's!).
exsto_human 10-28-04, 01:04 PM all of modern civilization, viva la anarchia!
Arditezza 10-28-04, 02:35 PM Darfur, Sudan.
Where if starvation, military clashes, or genocide doesn't kill you... AIDS will.
Right now, it's the saddest place I can think of.
Dreamwalker 10-28-04, 02:38 PM Hmm, Uganda is pretty bad too, military regime that uses children for soldiers and does whatever it wants to the population.
sargentlard 10-28-04, 06:37 PM Rwanda, Calcutta.
Killjoy 10-29-04, 07:53 PM America...
Where - in spite of being the "Land of Opportunity" (Where the God Damned Streets are paved with Gold... GOLD, God Damn it...!!!!)
People need special drugs to get horny enough to have sex...
Are so disatisfied with their appearance that plastic surgery is the most prevalent elective procedure performed...
Have such an overabundance of food that they need "fat blockers", "carb blockers", and zippity-doo-dah diet pills to keep their indulgences from turning them into bloated sacs...
Are so inactive in their daily lives that a plethura of snake-oil peddlers trundle out an unceasing parade of "exersize machines" intended to "tone up their flab" (with as little effort as possible - hah!)...
Are so benumbed that they are fascinated with "reality television", which bears no resemblance whatever to reality...
Where there is - in the midst of plenty - a higher suicide rate than during the Great Depression...
TruthSeeker 10-30-04, 01:02 PM I'm with the guy above me.... ^

Gravity 10-30-04, 02:15 PM This guys is a bit obsessed - but he makes good points:

lixluke 12-30-04, 11:11 AM Is the internet a place?
Sad as in hellishly underdeveloped full of misery, oppression, poverty, and disparage?
I'd have to say the typical loony farm.
If you've seen the movie "Girl Interrupted," you haven't seen anything.
The place people are supposed to be going under mental health treatment to get better, and kill themselves specifically because of the hell their halfbrained staff and shrinks put them through. Then environment of some of these places are such dumps, it perpetuates a community of ever increasing insanity.

Suppose to be? maybe. What it is? hell
India has way too many historic places and places important to religious history to name....but as it stands; ugliness is prevalent in every which one.
analbeads 12-30-04, 06:49 PM Somalia- starvation.
Bangladesh- constant poverty, hunger, disease, bad luck with acts of nature (ie-floods, etc....
I'm American and don't agree with many of the things that happen here, with our government and the examples our culture sets...but I do think there are worse places to be like the two places above that I listed.
Roraclerk 12-30-04, 08:01 PM Buffalo, NY, USA

Godless 12-30-04, 08:50 PM SriLanka got to be pretty depressing right about now.
As much as I hate to admit it, the way Kill Joy depicts America is pretty accurate. But it sure as hell beats SriLanka right about now!! No Kill Joy? Would you rather be there?.
As for the best state in The US to live, Well Nevada is cool, we got Las Vegas, Tahoe and Reno. Plus you can purchase booze here 24/7. Prostitution is Legal in many counties. So you got a place that you can get oblitarated on booze, and if your wife kicks you out, the local brothel may accomandate ya!. LOL..
Godless.
Killjoy 12-30-04, 08:54 PM Depends...
