View Full Version : Russia moved missiles into Georgia
cosmictraveler 08-18-08, 05:30 AM GORI, Georgia - The Russian military moved missile launchers into a breakaway Georgian province ahead of a pledged pullout, The New York Times reported, citing U.S. officials.
Russia's president promised to start withdrawing forces from positions in Georgia on Monday, but suggested they could stay in South Ossetia, the region at the heart of the fighting that has reignited Cold War tensions.
The Times, citing anonymous U.S. officials who were familiar with intelligence reports, reported that the Russian military moved missile launchers into the region on Friday.

cosmictraveler 08-18-08, 07:15 AM Col. Sam Gardiner notes, in an interview with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now, Russia has deployed tactical nuclear weapons to South Ossetia. The SS-21 Missile launchers are relatively weak compared to bombs that have already been used against Georgia by the Russian air force. However, this move does indicate Russia is potentially upping the game from a conventional weapons war to a tactical nuclear weapons war. Gardiner notes that at a news conference on Sunday, the US Deputy National Security advisor has noted these weapons arriving in South Ossetia.

No, I don't think the Russians have the ability to project power that far, there is something else going on here.
Russia has always been looking for warm water acess to the oceans.

its a good theme for rocky 7. maybe Rambo can come and help the Georgians?
cosmictraveler 08-18-08, 11:15 AM Well, it would seem to me that the Georgians aren't really up to defend themselves just like Kuwait wasn't. Ever wonder why those parts of Georgia wanted to break away from it? Shouldn't someone try to inmtervene and resolve this mess before something stupid happens? Where's Condi? Where's anyone? What has been going on for over a year that this situation has come to this I'd ask?

This all started over a year ago so what made it change from a dialog to a war? If something isn't done very quickly Russia will advance its troops into Georgia and establish its own party rule once again.

what change was the Georgians were silly enough to give the Russians an excuse.
but at least, it shows that all the anti american propaganda going on around this last decade is nothing more then bullocks, the US is not the problem.
EndLightEnd 08-18-08, 11:31 AM the US is not the problem.
Not the WHOLE problem...

Oh really?
South Ossetia President, Eduard Kokoiti solicited that his state be part of Russia, Russian news agency RIA Novosti informs quoted by AFP. Kokoiti declared that his country is divided and that the best solution would be that South Ossetia joins North Ossetia, the South West Russian region.

Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania has proposed direct talks with the South Ossetian President, Eduard Kokoiti.
Mr Kokoiti has refused such a meeting in the past whilst Georgian soldiers remain in the region.
The US state department has called for restraint and a return to political dialogue.
The Georgian interior ministry has now pledged to pull out one-third of its troops if the situation remains calm for several days.
On Monday President Kokoiti called the fighting a well-planned provocation by Georgia but he insisted he was still willing to search for a compromise.
Many South Ossetians want to join up with their ethnic brethren in North Ossetia, which is part of Russia.
As part of the ceasefire deal, the two sides had agreed to create additional buffer zones between their positions.
iceaura 08-18-08, 12:42 PM but at least, it shows that all the anti american propaganda going on around this last decade is nothing more then bullocks, the US is not the problem. "The US", in the sense of the PNAC detritus, Reagan residue, and corporation imperialists W&Co installed in the government, is pretty deeply involved in Georgia.
And have pretty well screwed the pooch again, from the initial looks of things. Does anyone have a link to the current status of "George W Bush Highway" - the main road to the main airport (http://www.uncorneredmarket.com/2007/08/tbilisi-scavenger-hunt/) ? But we do have hints of a larger plan, with those nearby missile defense systems aimed at Russia.
Mr.Spock 08-18-08, 12:58 PM yes, Russia bombs another country and its all the US fault.
they werent appeasing enough?
So if Iran sends some missile units to Lebanon to point towards Israel, what would the Israeli response be?
Mr.Spock 08-18-08, 01:01 PM So if Iran sends some missile units to Lebanon to point towards Israel, what would the Israeli response be?
i think russia should stop bombing neighboring countries for no reason.
Mr.Spock 08-18-08, 01:03 PM Oh really?

probably a russian puppet.
Mr.Spock 08-18-08, 01:22 PM Yeah exactly
he served his purpose. now the Russians got what they came for, whatever that was.
Mr.Spock 08-18-08, 01:32 PM a big surprise. i just read Russia oil and gas production is falling behind, "against" predictions.
