I think "socialism" is reserved for countries, nations, societies, etc ......NOT for hospitals or coffee shops! ...LOL!

You could believe in the tooth fairy for all I care. The fact of the matter is that socializing medicine reduces cost and provides quality services to all. As for coffee shops, who is arguing to have socialized coffee shops?

Yes it is very telling that Hawaii has been the most agressive state in pursuing universal healthcare.

He may be evil, but he ain't stupid

Actually, I'll accuse him of being smart. One cannot be an idiot and make hundreds of millions of dollars peddling sacks of pure bullshit.

This is America; it's all about the money.

According to you, Limbaugh's trip to the hospital was either a PR stunt or a ploy to get drugs. It told us nothing about the quality of American healthcare because they couldn't figure out what was wrong, remember?

Something about consumers, intelligence, and America

It's a fair argument, but if we stop to consider some of our most successful celebrities, many took a distasteful act and transformed it into a major capital success: Madonna, Roseanne, Rush; the days in which Charles Schultz and Bill Cosby pushed the list of most successful celebrities is over. Conning people, as Rush Limbaugh and others do, does require some intelligence. The failure of the intellect in such cases comes in not recognizing or caring about the damage they do.

Of course, that also suggests a few things about the intelligence of consumers, but, well ... this is America.

    • • •

    But Rush did:

Released from the hospital with a clean bill of health, Rush instantly took the opportunity to take a shot at the effort to reform the health care system while effusively praising the Hawaiian hospital that had taken such good care of him.

I don't think there's one thing wrong with the American health care system. I got no special treatment other than what anybody else that would have called 911 and had been brought in with the same kinds of symptoms.

    (Ungar)

And as to what that means in regard to the present thread?

Not only is Hawaii the closest thing to a socialist health care system in the nation, it was actually the model for the Clinton Administration's failed effort to institute universal health coverage back in the early 1990's. Despite the fact that the state has the highest costs in the country for just about everything – due to the necessity of shipping everything to the islands from the mainland- Hawaiian comprehensive health insurance comes with some of the smallest co-pays and premium charges in the country. What's more, the costs per Medicare beneficiary is the lowest in the United States ....

With everyone covered by primary care, emergency room visits tend to be for real emergencies, not the non-emergent care mainland ERs dispense for people without coverage. That reduces the costs of ERs and the costs of non-emergent medicine since patients can be handled less expensively and more effectively by their primary doctors. Hospitals have not overbuilt, acquiring expensive machines to compete with their neighbors for patients. Insurance companies have instituted screening and other measures to improve wellness among their covered populations.

    (ibid)

That's a pretty good testament to "socialism".

    Then let's socialize it!
Privately, through charity and donation. See? No problem.

    Marxists and communists.

Again private donations are not enough.

Well those people have been sidelined a long time ago, they have had no say in the present debate on medical insurance in the USA.

That is irrelevant; the point is that the government should never babysit us. If donations are not enough, then that is the fault of society and society will suffer as a result of the apathy and pathetic nature of human beings.

The cure to apathy is to let people on their own, to live by their own steam and thrive or die according to their own steam; the cure to apathy is not to have a babysitter. What is the point of charity or community involvement or interaction when 'government will do it'?

Really? There are still communists around even to this day; and what do you think will happen once the 'mainstream' left takes hold? It will just continue more and more to the left, until you reach communism.

    So no police or firemen?

So we just suffer and not attempt to fix it?

How can people care if they are too busy trying to survive?

Government does not do everything, for example say you want to make a community park, the government even the local government is not going to help unless you can gather the community to make the park.

Aaah the grand slippery slope, so if we do this and inact medical reform we will eventually become communists... how long from now? 20 years? 50 years, 100 years? The present healthcare bill is not even as socialist as japan's healthcare system which they have had for 30 years, are they communist? Britian has had full socialized medicine for 60 years now, are they communists? Germany has had it for over ~125 years now, they have gone through a huge range of governments and have since the 1990's become less communist, when is communism suppose to take over them for their socialized medicine?

This is simply to uphold the law and for liability purposes; it is not a provision of a good, such as in the case of health care, where it is the responsibility the individual to work and pay for their own health care just like everyone else.

No, no no no no! Don't you get it!
We do attempt to fix it. WE attempt to fix it, as individuals, through our own involvement. NOT THE GOVERNMENT!
How many people are 'busy trying to survive' in the United States?

Then the same principles can be applied to charity and to anything else; we need more involvement, not less! In the UK, before their communist medicine, there used to be homes all across the country for the care of the sick and poor. This is what should be encouraged! People getting involved themselves, and not resorting to 'the government will do it'.

It is only the opposition that is keeping it from going full-on communist. There are plenty of extremist leftist nuts that would just love to see Marx's dream come to life.

How is maintaining your health a good? You mean like a product, good health is a product? How can one work and pay for their own health care if they are sick and dieing?

Seems to go against social norms, individuals may care but people don't give a dam.

what you were asking for of "to live by their own steam and thrive or die according to their own steam" is not the USA, it more like Somalia.

but the previous system did not provide nearly as much care as the present one.

And their always will be no matter the government, just as their will be right wing nuts that believe in ideologies of how things "should be" without taking into account reality that things don't work out like that because people are greedy selfish talking apes. Both communist and free marketeers have the same problem if only from opposite political spectrum, your free-market will never and has so far only lead to ruin, too much deregulation and what do we get: the great depression, the great recession, economic instability and poor growth, true you could argue that if it was a true free market it would work, but its utopian, we can't achieve it without going through stages of deregulation and then it all falls apart. The same with communist, it can never be achieved because it falls into a totalitarian state instead. The cause for this failing it not taking into account that the world has evils and ills and always will as long a humans live (my solution: replace the humans) free market and total charity as you call for will not work because people are greedy shits, just as communism will never work because people are greedy shits, a mixed market with laws to try to prevent people for loopholing and cheat and to cover the the inadequacy of charity is the best we can get, true it not ideologically simple to understand in right and wrongs, but it works.

    Then help them!
So they will give more of a damn when you introduce a babysitter? I doubt it.
No, it's more like being an entrepreneur and making it on your own instead of relying on handouts.
What does it matter the quantity if we violate principle? It is a matter of principle, and if we are to say that we stand for freedom then we must stand for freedom and never sacrifice it for utility.
Are you serious! That was caused because of the government, not because of its lack; we haven't been a capitalist country for decades. What the hell are you talking about?

So regulation causes all these problems like poor growth, and mal investment, and your answer is more regulation? What the hell is wrong with people?

how? me alone? or everyone, how do we get enough people to help without some kind of authority forcing it?[/QUOTE]

Does it matter if they care or not? it would be getting done. And its not like health care would damage all charity.

what that have to do with health care?

Then no police and fire fighters and lawyers and judges, if you want to achieve freedom to its principle then you want anarchy.

no, no, what the hell are you talking about.

No that was deregulation. Those systems were more regulated, then less regulated then *boom* fail, not the other way around. Next your going to be telling me that America has the best medicine in the world and that American's aren't living short lives then their tortured socialist European counter parts, aren't leaving by nearly a million a year for medical tourism to get surgeries in those horrible socialist states with their cured and ineffective medicine which usually has higher cured/success rates compared to our medicine and yet cost only a fraction of our medicine. Its as if the sky is red to you.

We try to get them to help instead of trying to take their money. That's what we do. We educate and promote.

Then you're violating the principle of autonomy.
Live off of your own steam instead of relying on handouts and 'free' things.

    In theory, yes.

No, no, seriously, what the hell are you talking about? This hasn't been a free market country for decades; subsidies, handouts, excessive regulation, barriers to entry, corporate protectionism and lobbying

    See above.
America does have the best quality care in the world.

If you want socialism, go to Europe Bye.

oh yeah that will work, that why we have all those African kids alive and well from all those 'help African orphan' commercials right? No, they are still dying by the millions! Your never going to get enough people to give for a cause like universal healthcare through charity, its against human nature for people to give that much voluntarily, you would need to genetically engineer everyone into angelic altruists!

Why? We live in a society, we must work together, must help each other. Jeez I wonder if you were to live to the singularity and the machines take over and we all live like kings and queens, no jobs because the machines make everything, living rich from stock in those AI control companies or gigantic government stipends from the taxes on the AI control companies, just sitting back as a robot waiter bring another drink and a love bot manipulates your genitals, never working for anything and everything being free and handed out... your head would explode!

American has never been such a market, no country has been, this is the problem with your logic your stating a utopian ideal is if it could actually be achieved and worse you claim that because it not achieved to the fullest that why it fails, well guess what it can't be achieved to the fullest so then it will never work, just like communism!

Exactly my point it has never been done unless your considering anarchy states like Somalia, and those certainly disprove that theory.

no we don't, we live shorter lives, we have higher infant mortality, lower survival rates for a variety of major disease, etc, etc yet pay more then any other country by twice, yet they get to see doctors more often, get more testing, live longer and recover better. The only way you could possibly say "best quality" is that we have the best surgeons, of whom only work for the very wealthy that can afford them hence why we have them to begin with because they come to America to maximize their profit, if your worried about that the bills being put forward would do nothing the change that, those surgeons could still continue working at incredible wages, the bill only adds the possibility that now all Americans could get access to such doctors by not having the insurance drop them when they get sick or better yet having them on insurance, insurance that is forced to cover the surgeries.

and that why 750,000 Americans last year went to Europe to get surgeries and medical treatments, well I don't think it because they wanted socialism rather because our non-socialist medical system sucks balls and they could not afford it.

Yeah, but the point was that Joe was dismissing Rush's claims as meaningless, given the lack of diagnosis (and, to be fair, I think this was a reasonable conclusion on Joe's part). It suddenly becomes "very telling" when people mention the socialist leanings of the Hawaiian government? That's not a consistent argument.
