THESE ARE THE OFFICIAL RULES OF DEBATE
Please link this page to anybody that violates the official rules of debate.
Persuasion debates do not belong in a logical discussion.
Presuasion Debate: A debate with the single purpose of winning using any tactic to win without regard for truth or validity. Any method can be used in a competitive debate for the purpose of winning.
Logical Debate: A debate with the single purpose of discussing positions in a disagreement with logic. There is no persuasion whatsoever involved in this type of debate. Each party understands the possibility that their position can be wrong. Methods must follow pure logic. Such debate is not about persuasion, but about understanding. It is the party's objective to present the message clearly. It is the other party's objective to develop a clear understanding of what the party is expressing. Each party has these responsibilities.
Debate Components
Every debate must be defined by a specific declarative statement.
This statement is a proposition.
A proposition is a statement that can either be true or false.
Individuals participating in the debate must choose one position.
This position is a conclusion regarding the proposition.
..... Pro: (Conclusion that the proposition is true.)
..... Con: (Conclusion that the proposition is false.)
A position is defended with an argument.
An argument is a series of points used to prove the veracity of a conclusion.
The basis of a poof is a premise.
A premise is an assertion in the form of a specified fact or assumption used to establish the argument.
Logical reasoning is based on the premise that assumes logic to be the given method of reasoning.
A premise is supported by points.
Points are central inferences relevant to supporting the argument.
An argument may be logically valid, but not necessarily true.
A sound argument is one that is logically valid and true.
A fallacy is an argument that is logically invalid.
Fallacies can never be used in any form as a part of an argument.
Premise -------------------------------->Conclusion
Points
Scientific Method
Logic is not the scientific method.
Logic is a facet of the scientific method.
The scientific method uses systematic physical experimentation to derive a conclusion.
