View Full Version : Riverworld UberDragon 03-24-03, 05:04 PM I watched Riverworld last night and I felt a little disappointed. Is there going to be a series? could it be the replacement for Farscape? Has anyone read the books and are they any good? NenarTronian 03-24-03, 07:12 PM I read the first book of the series, "To your scattered bodies go." It was great, amazing, thought provoking, scary (to me..thinking of my own mortality scares the hell out of me). But yes, the first book was great, i hear the others in the cycle are great also but i doubt i'll read them. I did check out the movie for a little bit in the begining, and read some of the plotline on scifi.com, it doesnt seem to follow the books. But, not seeing the movie, i can't comment on it fully.. hope i've been helpful Pollux V 03-24-03, 07:12 PM I thought it was cool. Low budget, acting and characters weren't phenomenal, but it was still cool. I don't think they're making a series out of it, although it would probably make a better replacement for Farscape than Tremors. Persol 03-24-03, 08:06 PM I thought the movie left some to be desired, but then I read the synopsis of the books online and was amazed. I think that a series could get alot of mileage out of the idea. And I do think this is a better replacement then tremors... but ANYTHING is a better replacement then tremors. CounslerCoffee 03-24-03, 11:24 PM I read on aintitcoolnews.com a week ago that they were making a series out of this. It might be interesting, but Im not watching scifi channel anymore. FRELL THEM! NenarTronian 03-25-03, 03:43 PM frell.. frell.. hitchhiker's's allusion? the thing about reading so many books is that when the book is quoted right to me i often overlook it.. Niudo 03-26-03, 06:36 PM I thought that the movie was pretty good, mean I loved the fact that, like, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and Mark Twain were there. Nero was cool, too. He certainly was insane enough to be Nero. But... My dad says that the movie didn't really follow the books. I mean, the concept of Riverworld was the same. But most of the characters he didn't remember. I mean, Mark Twain being there and building that riverboat. Come on, Mark Twain has to be a big character in something called RIVERworld. Apparently, in the books, Sir Richard Francis Burton was a big character, and it was a really cool part of the story. They ARE making a series out of it? Awesome. ~Nivao Ghost of Mirkwood SnakeLord 03-27-03, 02:39 AM For those of you who haven't read the entire riverworld series i'd have to say you're really missing out. Absolutely amazing stuff. I read 'to your scattered bodies go' many years ago and it resulted with me now being a huge Mark Twain, (Sam Clemens), fan. The way it mixed real life people into a sci fi story of such outstanding design is superb. I didnt even know there was a film though :D I'm English so i guess it's just cause we're a bit behind with movies. I'll look out for it Nivao 03-27-03, 10:44 AM Well, I've been trying to get around to reading them. Lot of stuff I'm trying to get through though. Among all the homework I've got the "required reading." Plus, I'm trying to get through "A Fire Upon the Deep." Any of you read it? It's good so far. According to my dad "it has the BEST science, and blah bluh blah bluh blah, SCIENCE, blah blah blah." So I'm reading it. ciao Namarie ~Nivao Ghost of Mirkwood (my friend had left herself logged on at my house in the last post, i am NOT niudo) CounslerCoffee 03-27-03, 10:48 AM Hmm. Ya know I had heard that the main character is supposed to be French. Is that true? In the movie the main character is an American astronaut. Who quite possibly could have been shot through a wormhole. And is stuck in a distant part of the galaxy, and he knows an alien, and he was being held prisoner with an alien, whose now his friend... And now they run around on a ship, a steamboat ship brought to life with material from meteors... I think I smell something funny.... farscape farscape farscape farscape farscape Pollux V 03-27-03, 02:42 PM Counsler I admire your commit-ah-ment...(a reference maybe from Dune 2000 or Episode I..I dunno...) These books sound pretty awesome, perhaps I should get to reading them after I'm done with Nietzsche... French Not French. Freedom. The French Language=the Freedom Language. The French Connection=The Freedom Connection. Among all the homework I've got the "required reading." Yeah, I've got The Republic. Some of that stuff is really tough to get through.... NenarTronian 03-27-03, 02:47 PM Pollux 5, What's "THE REPUBLIC"? Surely not Plato's.. Nivao 03-27-03, 06:18 PM hmmmm.... Is it about WWII? I hate all the books we have to read about WWII!!!!! I mean, there were other wars too, weren't there? Grrrrr. Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, Year of Impossible Goodbyes, not to mention the very long list of books we had to read in 4th grade. What about the American Civil War, Vietnam, Revolutionary War, War of the Worlds (good book actually, hard to understand the vocab, but, ya learn), Korean War, Desert Storm, War of 1812, one of the many wars between Egypt and Nubia, World War I maybe? I mean, if it was a world war, it might have been important. I don't even know who it was with we overlook it so much!!!! I mean, it's like WWII is our only history. Namarie ~Nivao Ghost of Mirkwood Pollux V 03-27-03, 07:05 PM Yep, it's Plato's alright. Up until today I had actually enjoyed the book, I think the class is about a third of the way through (book 4). And Nivao, WW2 may have been one of the most influential "events" that ever occured. The world was greatly changed after it ended, for better and for worse. But alas, this is the scifi forum, so we can only discuss Harry Turtledove's various alternative history analogies. Namarie, you and your friend wouldn't happen to be super-sexy scifi babes, would you, by any chance? Take this question any way that you please, it's a boring thursday night... Nivao 03-28-03, 10:14 PM I can see your point, WWII was a big deal, but, there is more to history than it. And I STILL don't know what WWI was about. Can someone help me out here?! And to that one question. I know that I'm a scifi GEEK, I'm not sure about Niudo, but I do have her reading Dune. Whether or not we're sexy babes, well, I'm not sure. Namarie ~Nivao Ghost of Mirkwood KatieRack@aol.com ;) Pollux V 03-29-03, 08:12 AM Yes, of course there is more history to the world, however, WW2 was the most important event of the modern era. WW1 caused WW2. World War 1 occured after several years of each of the many nations involved signing different secret treaties against each other. The Duke of Austria, or a man with a similar title, went on a trip to Yugoslavia I think, but I am not sure (Austria was much, much larger at the time). It might have been Italy. Anyway, he and his wife were assassinated, and Austria wanted to declare war on "That nation." However, that nation had signed secret treaties with many other nations (Russia, Germany, France, Britain) and so, the situation gradually spiralled out of control. The Germans invaded France, the fighting bogged down into trench warfare, and that's how the war basically played itself out. The Germans lost, however they were not responsible for the conflict. Nivao 03-29-03, 01:38 PM Are you like studying that right now, or something? Wait, no, you built a time machine, and asked the brother of Duke of Austria what happened. Namarie ~Nivao Ghost of Mirkwood Pollux V 03-29-03, 10:22 PM Are you like studying that right now, or something? No, I'm just intelligent;) Nivao 03-29-03, 10:31 PM Well, no one likes an arrogant know-it-all. Trust me, I know. *tear* Innyhoo... what were we talking about before jumping into WWI? Namarie ~Nivao Ghost of Mirkwood Pollux V 03-29-03, 10:36 PM I believe I've said all I intend to regarding Riverworld, for the time being. Niudo 03-30-03, 01:56 PM Originally posted by Pollux V Namarie, you and your friend wouldn't happen to be super-sexy scifi babes, would you, by any chance? Take this question any way that you please, it's a boring thursday night... Well then. I see we were discussing me while I was gone? Oh. So that's the way it's going to be, eh? Well. To answer your question, slightly better than Nivao... Er... Well I guess it does depend on who you're asking. If I really wanted to, I could pretend to be Britney Spears or someone equally repulsive. But I won't. I could also pretend to be a penguin with teeth. But I won't do that either. It is true that we both like scifi, and although I was more or less forced into my appreciation, it's still brilliant. And Nivao's about as far gone as you can get. But that's okay. We're pathetic together, and also penguins with teeth together... no, no, no lying. Just forget the penguin thing. So, leaving you possibly more confused than I am, I will close my post by saying that I, myself, have no clue. Glad I could help. Now I'll just waddle along... I mean, go away... I mean, er, well, I'm not sure what I mean. Ah well, cheers- bloody cheers, my [I]mellon, and thanks for asking. I feel all... penguiny inside. I mean, good. [n][i][u][d][o] 'Other' Ghost of Mirkwood Pollux V 03-30-03, 04:47 PM In any case, I think one of you mentioned your age(s), being in the general range of 13. A bit young for me, I think... Niudo 03-30-03, 05:21 PM Actually myself I'm 14 but you quite obviously lie about your own age, Ian , otherwise you'd be... I don't know... in 9th grade? And that makes you a freshman. Which isn't very old, really. Just saying. Nothing personal. Nope, not at all. *cou[I]LIARgh* [n][i][u][d][o] 'other' ghost of mirkwood Pollux V 03-31-03, 06:42 AM I'm fifteen and a sophomore, thanks;) Niudo 04-01-03, 07:06 PM Yeah, well, you don't even WANT to know who I was with. And now I will stop derailing these kind people's thread and retreat to my own turf. Cheers! Nivao 04-02-03, 04:57 PM Do I want to know who you were with? YES! Do tell, preciousssss, do tell. I'll mourn for thee, if you tell. Namarie ~Nivao Ghost of Mirkwood P.S Why have I had the sudden urge to use the words 'thee, thy, thou, and art' lately? Answer: It's FUN :D CounslerCoffee 04-02-03, 11:38 PM Moderator Warning: Please get back on topic. Klaatu 04-05-03, 02:51 AM The topic? Oh yeah, Riverworld. I saw the pilot for the series, but have never read the books. At least, I assume it was a series pilot, because it definitely left things wide open for continuation. I was not impressed with the pilot. The Sam Clemens character struck me as being too much of a take charge type. Only at the end did he fit my preconceived notions about him as being laid back. The alien's twitch was really annoying. Several parts of the plot made no sense at all. Basically, it sucked. Nivao 04-07-03, 04:25 PM Yeah, it was pretty lame. I thought that the alien's twitch was... normal. I mean.... there are many different possibilities of lifeforms. Just read A Fire Upon the Deep, those Skroderiders are weird.
