View Full Version : Request: A linguistics subforum.
Athelwulf 01-24-07, 12:06 AM I would like a subforum for discussions related to, about, or even in different languages.
I consider myself an amateur linguist who may not know as much as he should, but probably knows more than the average person. I feel that linguistics is one field of science I shine in, relative to other fields. As much as I like other sciences in general, I only know enough that I'm not a bumbling idiot about science like some on this forum (and I won't name any names).
Although there's no real need for this subforum, I think creating it will promote relevant discussions and attract linguists to SciForums. A need would simultaneously be created and satisfied.
Any thoughts?
Oh, and please vote in the poll!
EDIT: On second thought, concerning the poll, I don't think I made a perfect one. If you're unsatisfied with your choices, please post in the thread and elaborate on your opinion.
Athelwulf 01-24-07, 01:00 AM I'm glad you agree man. :)
That would be...........not sciforums. Or would it be? Or would it not be? Or what would it be if it would not be? Is this sciforums? Do any of you speak english? I dont understand these letters...I thought I came here to understand science but now all I see is another language that I cannot understand...so I feel empty...lost...silent.
Athelwulf 01-24-07, 01:56 AM Linguistics is a science too!
Linguistics is a science too!
not when I am blind to words I see and silence surrounds my soul. It is like having discovered love to a girl on the other side of the universe...and she is never to be with you together...just pointless.
spuriousmonkey 01-24-07, 02:36 AM how many linguistics threads are there per month?

Yes I would definitely post in a Linguitics subforum if there was one.
spuriousmonkey 01-24-07, 07:38 AM If I may ask out of curiosity: what stops you from posting on this topic right now?
I've posted on something that comes within Linguistics already- namely versification, in the Art&Culture subforum. I wouldn't have posted that in a linguistics subforum anyway, since its more proper place is in poetry. But I'm not talking about starting new threads. If someone else started an interestin threads, of course I would post in those, and maybe also get ideas for new starting new ones.
Athelwulf 01-26-07, 10:37 AM I believe there is a thread going on in Free Thoughts that could qualify for this proposed subforum as I had defined it.
Clicky the linky.
phonetic 01-26-07, 12:35 PM Hey, I fit right into linguistics :)

zenbabelfish 01-27-07, 05:51 PM cool - especially some historical linguistics
Athelwulf 01-27-07, 11:48 PM cool - especially some historical linguistics
Exactly! It would enable me to finally find answers to questions such as, what English words, if any, are cognate to Dutch/Afrikaans/Frisian taal and to North Germanic mål/mál.
whitewolf 01-28-07, 02:21 PM Linguistics is an interesting science and these are science forums. We have multilingual members and members from outside US. Everyone would enjoy and benefit. As it is now, threads about/in other languages and language use have no proper section.
I propose to mod that forum if it comes into existence and I promise you there will be a new thread in it every couple of days or so.
We've had such propositions before, but no action was taken. Please oh please make that subforum!

akasha1 01-29-07, 02:32 PM Jā, baigi labā ideja! Lingvistikas forums būtu forši. :)
hm, ok... linguistics forum will stink?
:D No!
Second sentence: "A linguistics forum would be nice."
akasha1 01-29-07, 03:23 PM lol, i thought forsi had more forse to it then 'nice'
Well, there isn't an exact word for it in English, I'm afraid, but it's closer to 'cool' than to 'nice', but not that strong as 'great' which is 'lieliski'.
akasha1 01-29-07, 03:46 PM well, and that lieliski for great, sounds too gay to mean great... sounds more like "you are hung like a mouse" :D
akasha1 01-29-07, 05:45 PM if anyone likes russian, this is the link to see. its a clip from a new cartoon that came out resently about dobrinja nikitich
