Remember malls? Remember spending half your day in a mall? Remember spending all your disposable income in a mall? Remember going out for the sake of going out with a pocket full of credit cards? Remember when it was all important to outdo your neighbors?

Ten years ago- the good old days.

somehow I never was part of that deal and never will be. Its an American disease, I am not an American to spend my life in Walmart.

Um, Walmart is not a mall, it's a store.

I live near two very successful ones owned--in part--by the Dutchess of York (Sarah Ferguson) vis a vis the Westfield Corporation. They are always packed and apparently very profitable. Though, to be fair, they are some of the very few I know of. Shopping malls and all their inconvenience are a fading trend, I think may be gone for good in short order.

Here in Key West we never had a mall or probably won't ever have one either. I have gone to Miami and seen a mall, it wasn't that big of a deal and I can't see how anyone could spend an entire day there.

Key West and Stock Island support a fluctuating population of about 45k (if I remember from my days living there. . . . ahhhhh to move back). In retail, a place like a mall--especially a successful one--requires a population base of at least 100k-150k (depending on the affluence of the area). This is espeically true if you want it anchored by stores like Dillards, Macy's, Sears, JCP, Kohl's, Elder Beermen and their like. This says nothing about the population needed to support malls with Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nieman Marcus. I've been to a few wannabe malls anchored by Walmart and Kmart, but they are just scary.

Of course it was only inevitable that the big, ugly homogenized buildings known as malls are soon to be replaced with even bigger, uglier and more homogenized buildings known as Walmarts. How long do you think it will be before Walmart starts installing housing projects within their stores so people will have the convenience of not having to do all that pesky driving/walking/moving? And then America can be one giant Walmart supercenter! I can't wait!! :xctd:

You don't need an arcade, do you? PS3 and XBox 360 Games have better graphics and, in the long run, they're probably cheaper than putting tons of quarters into a coin-op machine.

"Arcade" is a classic term--once used here in CanUSA and still used in Europe and the Commonwealth--to describe an enclosed shopping center with multiple venues and merchants.

Ah, well, playing PS3 all day would probably be cheaper than spending all your money in that "arcade", too.

Where do you live? The only Anglo nations missed (and not for long) by Walmart are Australia and New Zealand. Britain has ASDA (which is a Walmart company). Other nations with Walmart corporations are Japan (Seiyu), Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Brazil (Bompreço), China and India.

You couldn't walk in a straight line for very long in the USA and miss a Walmart, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Marketside or SAMs (all divisions of the same company). Even more frequent would be the Walmartesque other supercenters like Meijer, Target and Kmart/Sears Grand.

Throw in the Costcos, BJ's and other sundry regional supercenters and, well. . . you get the picture.

I like malls--especially stores like Bigelow, Sephora, Bebe, Nordstrom etc. I like to go at least once/month and stock up on new stuff. I like WalMart, too. It's kind of fun to see all the cheap stuff but I try not to buy anything from Mexico or China.
    Interesting-looking people there, too.

Yeah...but you can't meet girls with a PS3. When I was a teen, the mall WAS the place to hang out. It was one of the few places for teens to congregate, without having to actually buy anything. We'd hang out in the arcade, and play games, or the food court. Parents we're cool with it, as it was a controlled atmosphere...and not a whole lot of mischief can go on with mall security around.

Good point, though a former co-worker of mine met his girlfriend through World Of Warcraft.

But I'm married, so I don't need to meet women. Cheap entertainment is good enough for me.

What malls are disappearing? I haven't gone in a while, but the malls around here can take days to explore all of it. So yes I remember malls, I see them everyday. They are a whole lot of fun. Not to mention seeing and/or meeting celebrities all the time. Wish I had been a teen while living in los angeles.

Once you've seen one mall, you've seen them all.
