How can you remove a registry key that shows up as a threat on Spybot but cannot be removed or fixed? I found 26 of these things since Wendnesday .

If they can't be removed then would a complete removal of my OS be needed then reapplied?

    Thank you for your help.

    Have you tried anything else?

There's no problem in using different brands of adware removal, as long as you know they aren't actually some of the fake ones that cause the problems. I prefer Ad Aware myself.

There's also a number of registry cleaners out there. AML is one that's free, and I've used to restore bogged down machines with hundreds of missing or invalid keys and such.

If applicable to your OS, try taking it to the earliest date/state that's backed-up in Restore, in the slim hope that all the junk infected it after that. Also try the free versions of Superantispyware and Malwarebytes before you abandon ship (the former certainly astonished me once in regard to what it could do). ComboFix is a radical treatment / freebie download that might do the job, but dangerous if you if don't know what you're doing (definitely read any info you can find about it first). If you were on Windows XP, you could even place mrt.exe in "Run" for a good laugh, detection-wise, and see if that monthly Malware Removal Tool could do anything. LOL

I'm using Win7 Pro now and have tried AVG to see if it could help , which it didn't. I'm only finding about 15 bad registry items that Spybot found that it cannot fix but shows me where they are located. I could just remove them one by one myself but I do not know what other functions they may have on other things so if I did then I'd be having more problems. I will download those free tools you suggest first and see what they can do but await to know if removing them one by one will be a good idea or not. Thanks again for the help.

Why dont you move up the branch and tell us what they are? usually you can just delete them.

I will find them again and copy them to show you here if I can't get rid of them first. I'm trying C C ideas out first though.

Nothing found with Superantispywar so on I go. Combofox wants me to turn off my AVG anti Virus which I won't do so that ones out.

you can rename them with xxx at the end then restart. try your programs, see if the work then ctrl-f xxx in the regisrty to locate the renamed files and delete them.

I think you might be onto something there, I will give that a shot after I get the names of them and post them first.

of course you can just google the names but then you may get some generic response. most likely some program "finding" problems it put there.

I just finished rerunning Spybot and it fixed most of those problems , wonder why it didn't on the first time through? Perhaps it was the new updates that I just recieved and installed that made the difference.

Well now only 2 items are not being able to be fixed and I'll just try Spybot again after a new update appears, perhaps it is working on these new "infections" as I speak to get rid of them.

These malware zappers sometimes can't quarantine items if they are being used by other programs at the time you try to remove them. So it's a good idea to restart and try afresh when running into that problem. Also, over-aggressive versions of Spybot have "supposedly" had intermittent trouble involving false positives in the past, so bear that in mind, especially if no other program detects the stuff at all. You might occasionally be removing legitimate registry items that it mistakenly classed as "bad".

I didn't realize that. Matter of fact now that I've run the Spybot a third time it cannot find any other registry errors so I see what you mean. Thank you again for your valuable information.
