What is the most rednecky thing you own?
I know one of you has a helmet that holds a beer can on each side. Or a flannel shirt with the sleeves cut off. Or a Dale Earnhardt thong, or....

We have a deep fat fryer to cook a turkey.

I have a bratty little '68 Beetle, Baja conversion in authentic John Deere colors, "John Deere 1800" decals, brush guards, pintle hook, LOUD straight 4-1 exhaust topped with a big honking tractor-exhaust flapper. YeeeHaw! It's a hoot. If there's interest, maybe I'll post a picture when the snow thaws off her (no heater - brrr)

Whats a rednecky thing?

I do not think this simple question should go unanswered. It raises a vast amount of sociological, anthropological, ethical and descriptive issues.

OK. Here's an urban northerners shot. Please, real rednecks, and those situated closer, correct and adjust:

Rednecky adj. (adj form of redneck)

1) having the qualities of or being an object suitable for use by or likely to be purchased or created by a redneck (ie. a socially conservative rural USA citizen, individual, probably with not more than a high school diploma and probably part of the working class or unemployed and generally. Please note: this is a cliche description with many exceptions.)

2) having a combination of these qualities: tacky, practical, ad hoc, loud in colors, patriotic, and having traditional values. Often with details of blunt humor - sexual, political, etc.

3) informed by an aesthetic of down to earth who gives a shit how it looks common sense practicality. Function over form on one level. But on another level the form is central since it proclaims indifference to aesthetics and a denial of pretentiousness. An anti-elite quality. An underlying proclamation that everyone's shit stinks and that most aesthetics is an expensive and pompous denial of this fact.

Close but with the socio-economic thing, redneckery transcends financial boundaries( state and national borders too).

maybe these are kitsch.

Its what we call desi bling (or gauti for gaon or village. aka dehati)

The kind of stuff you see in some parts of the country (the rural representative, though not always rural) who like the COLORS and GADGETS and DECORATIONS. And overdoing it.

Is the concept right?

Sam,

The original term comes from people who work in the fields, bent over, so the back of their necks would be sunburn. It's evolved into a term that means mainly rural people who aren't quite as "sophisticated" as city folk.

Taste is involved in the answer. But that thing just does not remind me of redneck aesthetics. I would call it folk art.

There is something self-deprecating and intentionally low brow about redneck aesthetics. An in your face, so what if it's tacky.

I would guess the maker of the above thought it was beautiful in terms of its visual appearance, whereas to me rednecky stuff is fun for the redneck often as a collection of signs and symbols. Who gives a shit if it's beautiful is some of the message.

I think you are getting the related concept of kitsch

kitsch (kĭch) Pronunciation Key
n.

1. Sentimentality or vulgar, often pretentious bad taste, especially in the arts: "When money tries to buy beauty it tends to purchase a kind of courteous kitsch" (William H. Gass).

gaudy is often part of definitions of kitsch.

My family got very very lazy this year and went with the "We don't give a **** how it looks" redneck ideal for Halloween. So, instead of bringing down all the usual decor from the attic, and buying pumpkins...we took an old basketball, drew a face on it, and sat it outside on an overturned bucket covered with an orange Zellers bag. That is about as redneck as it gets folks. Oddly, we got a lot fewer kids coming to the door this year. :D We took pictures because we thought it was funny, but I don't know where they are.
