View Full Version : Red Hat 7.3 Bachus 09-26-02, 09:34 AM I'm about to install it however does someone know of any bugs/security stuff in this release? Stryder 09-26-02, 01:48 PM If you check the REDHAT site you'll find a BUG's section, with a page that covers the most current bugs and for what releases. http://www.redhat.com/solutions/security/news/ should help you find your way there. Hope you don't have any problems with Clone LAN cards like I did or internal Modems. (with Debian) Bachus 09-27-02, 04:28 AM Ok thanks. Install went nicely though it just won't seem to bring up the graphical interface when booting  Eman Resu 09-28-02, 11:04 PM Novice alert. Red Hat is a Linux system. Can some explain how it is different from Windows and who would benefit from migrating to such an OS? Thanks Stryder 09-29-02, 04:43 AM I haven't really used the GUI's that are mostly available in most linux systems, but you have to understand that the root of a linux system is commandline. You can install the GUI's like KDE, Gnome, Xwindows but you also have to make sure you load the right libraries that go with the GUI or it will fail to load. If you installed it all correctly then you should just have a command you type in to boot up the right GUI environment. I'm not use to Red hat myself so I would probably be checking out all the /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin to find out what the systems got in the way of programs and commands. Most of the commands should have some form of help in the way of man *prog* (replace *prog* with what ever prog you want to know about) or help *command* (replace *command* with a command) If your a newbie you might find installing new modules difficult, there are a few places on the net that do tell you the step by step method of downloading something from the net and installing it. Just understand that Windows games that use DirectX will not run on a Red Hat system (if your complete green), it is possible though to set up a system to run as duel boot so you can have both windows and Red Hat then you just have to choose which one you loadup at startup. Warning: While Redhat or other Linux systems has a decent enough priviledge system, if you allow anonymous FTP on a duel boot and they have access to navigate your system, they might be able to execute windows binaries. Futurist 09-29-02, 04:47 AM Windows XP better. Bachus 09-29-02, 05:00 AM Well i've run linux before but when i start x (startx) now it just won't do anything and i'm familiar with the not being able to execute some windows stuff but that is not a problem. I'll see if suse linux gives me the same problem. |
