All these pics you're posting have no relevance to the microbes in question should the claim of the researchers turn out to be true and they are really sans DNA.

However, it's still pretty early in the ballgame for that to be determined yet.
Although, one would think that there has been plenty of time since 2001 to get it all figured out. I think the answer to the question why a physicist is working on this is because he wants the limelight. He doesn't want anyone else to steal his discovery.
And, if such is the case, then he's showing a serious bias that is likely to affect his objectivity and taint his research into the nature of these beasties.
