Folk "arts" is the only escape (for me, of course) from the modern pop/rock/rap BS.
My favorites:
Groups:
Zdob si Zdub - (Moldova) incredible energy band
Ocean of Elza (Океан Ельзи ) -(Ukraine) - it's not exactly folk but the music touches my urban soul
Singers:
Pelageja (Пелагея ) - (Russia) - incredible voice and she's only 16 or 17 y.o.
I'd like to extend my horizons. Please, suggest your favorites.

Mmh, I guess Schandmaul and In Extremo can be counted to folk rock, so I would recommend them, at least if you understand German...

Butterfly Temple (Russian), Skyforger (Latvian), Dead Can Dance, Shu-De (absolutlely amazing sound). Armenian folk songs are also very good. Tibet mantras are awesome. Cirque du Soleil sounds very lively and cheerful. There's more, just can't recall the names atm.
Will try Pelagea, thanx.

BTW, if you tell where to get good gypsy music, I... I'll be overjoyed. The stuff at the store is too Russian.

Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention. I'm still mourning her ignominious death in a household accident.

Here is a site, FREE, that you can enjoy some great folk music on Sundays as I do. I hope you enjoy listening to these very talented people perform.
Sundays
at 1 pm on 91.3 FM
The focus of Folk & Acoustic Music is to create a community to support folk music. Throughout history, folk music has traveled in small circles, passed primarily by singing families who did not know how to write them down. Even today, folk music is obscure and hard to find. Through folk music, our history and culture is revealed in songs and stories. Every Sunday afternoon for 3 hours, WLRN airs the only folk music show in south Florida, which includes interviews and performances with local and national touring artists, and plays music from a collection of over 8000 CDs.
Everyone who hears Folk & Acoustic Music reacts differently. Some songs may trigger memories of growing up, or provoke laughter and even tears. Some of the historic or contemporary protest music may make you mad, or even empowered you to effect positive change. A guitar instrumental may mesmerize and inspire you to learn a new lick, or you can become encouraged to sponsor a house concert with a local folk organization. Some songs might even teach you about Florida’s history..
