Can anyone explain this to me?

(CNN) -- Four boys ages 9 to 14 have been charged with sexually assaulting an 8-year old girl, police in Phoenix, Arizona, said Wednesday.

The girl was lured into a vacant storage shed by the suspects, who offered her chewing gum, police said at a news conference.

The girl was restrained while the boys -- ages 9, 10, 13 and 14 -- sexually assaulted her, police said of the July 16 incident.

All the suspects except for the 14-year-old live in the same apartment complex, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Andy Hill. The 14-year-old has been charged as an adult, Hill said.

Detectives said the girl was placed in the custody of Phoenix child protective services after the attack because of her parents' attitude toward her.

The girl and the boys charged are all from families that have come to the United States from the West African nation of Liberia, police said.

Well, I may be mistaken, but in societies like the one both the victim and the culprits come from, doesn't a family consider themselves shamed if a girl has been raped? They probably shunned or punished her instead of acting towards justice.

No, i thought more along the lines of her parents acting cruelly towards her instead of caring, leading her to be removed from their custody.

I wonder what F8cktard from her home country came up with the idea that the rape victim should be shuned by the family and should forever be the victim.

How could the not want justice and punishment for the boys.

As a parent, I just don't get that.

I'm pretty sure the same responses are seen in a few middle eastern countries. I think it has something to do with the Muslim viewpoint.

Well it wouldn't be prudent to leave a child victim of rape in a household where she will be shamed.

    why assume they are Muslim?
They come from Liberia where the largest religion is Christianity. It hasn't been so long ago where rape victims were blamed in the US. There are still people that don't talk about it. Victims who are still ashamed. People who blame what the victim was wearing or where they were at.

Yes I am sure there are still cases where this brought up even today.

I think there is a difference between blaming the victim for increasing the likelihood of the crime and blaming the victim for the crime itself.

For example. If I go to the worst part of town at night wearing expensive clothes and flashing my money around, is it my fault for getting robbed ?

There is a huge difference between saying what were you thinking, what did you think was going to happen, and shunning them and solely blaming them for the incident.

Ultimately, the victim is not responsible for the crime. But anything they can do to reduce the chance of having the crime occur they should do. It's called street smarts.

In this case the girl is freaking 8 years old. She is a child. The parents are in charge of keeping her safe and making decisions that will help keep her safe.

The parents of all involved failed, and the shame should be on them not her.

Agreed. And don't give them medical attention when they are hemorrhaging to death.

Or just send them my way and I'll kick them to death for fun. I'd consider it my civic duty.

I would imagine that the 14 year old started it and encouraged the others.

I don't care what made them do it, I want to kick their disgusting little heads in until their dead bodies stop convulsing. They're not true children.

I don't think that anyone can adequately explain things like this in any rational way.

But you should realize, understand, that things like this and worse happen every single day of the year ...you just don't hear about it because it didn't make the news.

I'm not trying to shock people, nor am I trying to be flippant about it, but things like this is simply nothing new or different, and happens all the time. In Dallas just recently, we had a father and mother purposely starve their three small children in a ratty old motel by locking them in the bathroom. Yeah, systematically starving them ...for weeks!!

Shocked? Well, you probably should be, I guess ...but a similar thing happened just a month or so ago in some place in Florida, I think. See? Shit happens, and it happens all the time, and in every locale where humans exist.

Abrahamic faiths traditionally treat women like dirt, especially if they were "spoiled."
