Is it justified to react to random instant messages from people you don't know with hostility? That just happened to me with a member of this message board, and I'm pretty sure that person now will never talk to me again. Not that it particularly stresses me, I'm just a little frustrated.

To be honest, I do have my screen name posted on my profile. I reacted with hostility because this person is a new member, and so I had no way of establishing any kind of identity for them outside of what they told me in that instant message. I guess I'm an anti-social grouch.

Why would you even display your IM screen name when you could be contacted here?

Maybe I collect AIM screen names? Or maybe I like to instant message instead of Private messaging? I dunno. Do you think I'm anti-social, perpetuating my anti-social behavior by keeping my screen name up? Should I keep my screen name up?

Should I keep my screen name up?

Probably not, but if you do people may use it to bust balls...especially now that you made an issue of it. :)

(Yea. How did you figure out that this was a stupid way of trying to get attention?)

Besides, it's always been up and no one has used it to argue with me or mess with me before...

I find it annoying that people change their MSN name constantly. I miss the PSI powers to deduct under which new name the people are identifying themselves.

Can you hook my friend up with a belgium woman btw.

Yeah, other people complain about that too. I hardly ever log in to MSN. Last time was a month ago or so for a few minutes.

Here's an easy way to avoid the confusion: Don't talk to anyone you don't know.

I once had my IM handles in my profile. Then there was an incident where I got into a debate with some brainless dude. A friend of mine from here who I IM all the time (and who doesn't come by here much anymore, apparently) joined in on the debate. She and I effectively defeated this dude. Then he fucking got my friend's AIM handle and started bugging her. I called him out on it publicly on SciForums, added him to my ignore list, and promptly removed my handles from my profile.
