View Full Version : Ramadan Offensive?
ICRC, UN, Medecins Sans Frontieres all pull out or mostly pull out of Iraq, and rumors are flying of a day or days of resistance (like all the killing that came before wasn't resistance, but never mind) starting this weekend.
To me this is adding up to a whole new level of fighting that reminds me a little of the Tet offensive. I expect a string of suicide bombings, command-detonated mines, sniping, maybe even the capture of a few Americans for hostages. And not necessarily limited to Iraq, either. Anyway, a stepped-up level of sustained violence that can go on indefinitely. Kind of an Iraqi Intefadah, but something that we cannot quell with any more success than the Israelis have had.
Comments?

americans aren't accountable to anyone. if they decide, to be extra brutal nobody can't tell them anything. well not exactly. people might bitch but not too loud...and bitching is all they're gonna do. it's not like they're going to "put sanctions" on US, are they? they won't dare.

What students of the Vietnam war learn early on is that the Tet offensive was an immediate strategic loss for the Viet Cong but a long term political success. It demonstrated to the career military that Vietnam could not be conquered, and it changed public opinion in the U.S. such that a majority of people took a stand against the war. Not out of fear of the dreaded Cong, or any sympathy for their cause, but simply an unwillingness to pour out blood and treasure into a bottomless hole.
If the forces gathered in Iraq continue to increase pressure day by day, and especially if they can do something spectacular like capturing or killing high-level Americans, then the pendulum of opinion will swing and swing hard.
hypewaders 10-31-03, 08:24 PM I wish it would get swinging soon, 'cause I'm tired of pushing.

to all the rest of you, remember, what i said was not an opinion, or how good/bad it is. it's just a statement of fact.
Clockwood 11-01-03, 04:20 AM Ah yes... pray, fast, and then go blow up a Red-Cross van in the morning. Yeah... good idea.
Aren't you supposed to take it easy during Ramadan and not do any work at all on the day of rest? So why are there rpg attacks on those days?

The truth is that no US president ever shed a tear for our dead; no US politician ever sent a flower to our widows. The US government and media use different standards to measure suffering. It is precisely this hypocrisy and these double standards that make us sick, especially when on such a symbolic day for Chileans, the president of Chile, Ricardo Lagos, attended a memorial service at the United States embassy where the ambassador, William Brownfield, stated that "people who hate the United States must be controlled, arrested or eliminated".

Indeed.
American-backed Overthrow of the Democratic Government of Chile,Estimated civilian deaths: over 5000 people from the subsequent Pinochet terror campaign; at least 1000 people missing and presumed dead .
Democratic Marxist President] Salvador Allende was the worst possible scenario for a Washington imperialist, [who] could imagine only one thing worse than a Marxist in power — an elected Marxist in power, who honored the constitution, and became increasingly popular. This shook the very foundation stones on which the anti-Communist tower was built: the doctrine, painstakingly cultivated for decades, that “communists" can take power only through force and deception, that they can retain that power only through terrorizing and brainwashing the population.
After sabotaging Allende’s electoral endeavor in 1964, and failing to do so in 1970, despite their best efforts, the CIA and the rest of the American foreign policy machine left no stone unturned in their attempt to destabilize the Allende government over the next three years, paying particular attention to building up military hostility. Finally, in September 1973, the military overthrew the government, Allende dying in the process... (Full text here (http://www.stateterrorism.freeservers.com/newpage1.htm))

The toll so far has been about one dead and six wounded per day on average. I can just imagine the rhetoric in the resistance camps - "We need to increase the rate of American causalties to a dozen a day..." - and so today's shootdown of a Chinook will probably be the new pattern.
With between seven and ten thousand civilian Iraqi dead from the start of the invasion to now (that's around 30-40 per day) we'll probably see a big increase in that toll, as well.
hypewaders 11-02-03, 06:28 PM This President and his cabal do not understand who is listening to what, and who believes it or not.
Bring 'em on:bugeye:
Vortexx 11-03-03, 03:02 PM Look, these people just get a little edgy and irritated during Ramadan for not eating enough food during the day.... These attacks are just a temporarily nuisance and will surely pass when food habits go back to normal.. And should weapons fail, you could always start MacDonalds franchises in Baghdad to win peoples hearts and stomach for the american way...
