On the topic of racial diversity in schools, I will tell you that I have twice engaged in "White flight". Once as a child, and once as an adult.

I was born and lived in Gary, IN until I was nine. My neighborhood was all white in kindergarten, then a housing project was built next to my neighborhood and suddenly we were "racially diverse". This diversity did not last long, as crime suddenly shot up [I had a knife pulled on me in first grade] and all the whites soon left [including my family].

Then as an adult I moved into a small city that had one of the best school systems in the state of Illinois. It also happened to be over ninety percent white. I moved to this city BECAUSE it had such good schools and I have four kids. My neighborhood when I moved in was probably the most racially diverse in town, but all were upper middle class. My oldest son's best friends were mexican and black. Then a lawsuit was filed by a nearby school district [a large one] and our town lost. The two school districts were merged, and suddenly our schools were sixty percent black. Discipline problems went through the roof, test scores dropped like lead weights, and then all the white people [my family included] left. The town is now basically dead with one of the worst school systems in the state of Illinois.

I moved far away to one of the best school districts in the state of Indiana [it's usually number one or two]. This time I was sure there were no crappy large school districts nearby who might sue us and destroy the town. I honestly don't give a crap about diversity, I'm concerned with education. If the sudden increase in blacks at the schools had not been accompanied by an increase in discipline problems and a sharp decrease in education standards, I'd have been fine with it. Indeed, we stayed for a couple years but things just got worse and worse. My oldest son was in all the highest groups in the Illinois school system, but when we moved to Indiana he tested into remedial English! [he has since caught back up, but thank God we moved]

Rather than focusing on the diversity of our schools, lets work on the quality. Why does a black kid need to sit next to a white kid to learn? All the years of busing and desegregation have accomplished is to cause whites to move far away from the reach of these programs and lawsuits leaving the inner city systems to rot. Kids should go to school where they live and if your neighborhood happens to be mostly one race, so be it. Chasing all the whites out of town simply destroys the tax base and results in even worse schools than would exist if we ignored the racial makeup of schools. Stop the lawsuits and devote your energies to improving your own schools rather than destroying others.

Don't they teach kids about paragraphs in third or fourth grade?
