Anyone know of any anonymous Mac Gnuttella clients ?

It seems that the only way to be safe from RIAA snooping
software is to turn sharing off ! (they can't do much about downloads
as they don't know if you already own a copy of the file and are just downloading a copy).

But targeting the people who they can upload copyright material from
means that people will be less willing to share when the 1st prosecutions reach the courts.

So anyone know of any anonymous Mac Gnuttella clients ? Or if Acquisition
has any plans for a protected client coz I wanna turn sharing back on.
    Feel like a leech !

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET SUED. There are millions of file sharers and the odds of any one getting sued are for all practical purposes non-existent.

Gnutella cannot be anonymous simply because of the way the network is designed, it needs ip addresses to work. The only truly anonymous clients I know of are freenet (not searchable) and Earth Station 5 (windows only). Fortunately, the RIAA's efforts seem to be centered of kazaa at the moment.

Gnutella CAN be anonymous. I sent a proposal for that to the_gdf two weeks ago.

It just costs bandwidth for non-sharers and a bit of speed.

Simple hint: Two UPs are acting as proxies, who don't send the IP of the sharer, but simply an ID by which only they can identify the node, and then route the download.

Only one UP knows from where the dl comes and only one knows, where it goes.

By encrypting the transfer you could make it impossible (or at least very hard) to detect, even when you sniff the whole connection.

What happens if you do a similar thing w/ a server in somewhere like Europe (no subpoenas there)?

    Devils Advocate

    Yeah, OK, you got me.

I'm actually in England so I'm not at risk.

I was just playing devils advocate to see what happened.

For any other English (or European) readers.....

THERE IS NO RISK OF BEING PROSECUTED.

I'll say that again just in case.

THERE IS NO RISK OF BEING PROSECUTED.

"It's hard to see how these (non American) prosecutions will succeed. There may be grounds for civil lawsuits if it can be shown that these sevices (P2P)
were used for profit" (not personal use). - Straun Robertson - IT lawyer for international law firm Masons.

I still think that an anonymous client would encourage more
people to share though. The RIAA just want some big headlines and big fines
to scare as many people as possible.

Shared folder packed and always has been.

May your hard drives be forever happy.

I am discussing in the SecureP2P yahoogroup at the moment, and it seems, that this can become even more secure.

UDP transmissions seems to be able to be sent obscured, so that noone can find out, who sent them. Some Gnut Progs might be using this tech soon, so stay tuned.
