Asside from noodles, what are some quick and tastey meals?
Here is my favorite:

I would never be able to get my calories without steel cut oats. Here's a post I like to save for people.
If anyone is having a hard time eating oats or getting enough calories. Stop and listen to this post. Grinding steel cut oats up in a coffee grinder and throwing them in a shake is by far the easiest way to slam them down not to mention you can make some extremely cheap weight gainer shakes that are very good for you.
Step 1:
Buy a coffee grinder. They are cheap and you can buy them almost anywhere. I bought one at Target but anyplace like Walmart will have them. Here's an example:

Step 2:
Go to this website and use the store locator to find a retailer close to you to purchase this product. This stuff is gold. 560 calories per cup and the store by my house sells it for .99 cents a pound!

I do mine a bit different.. I use regular oatmeal, I add peanut butter, and 1 table spoon of Flax Seed. And the blender is plenty to grind everything up.. the oatmeal and Flax Seed.

Nikelodeon 11-14-06, 02:48 PM I love fruit smoothies.
francois 11-14-06, 02:50 PM Wow, that's brilliant. Maybe I'll start doing that. Good fiber, carbs, not much fat but still some, good protein. Good balance of energy nutrients. I've heard flax seed is excellent for you too. Do you feel any different now that you're pounding these down pretty frequently? Any weight gains?
sderenzi 11-14-06, 02:51 PM I like fruit smoothies to, especially the ones between hot womans legs LOL
francois 11-14-06, 02:54 PM Pretty good for people like me who eat a lot. I don't know how much I eat per day, but I'm sure it's well over 3,000 Calories. Food gets expensive. So if you can eat cheap and nutritious filler in between "normal person" meals, that's a very good thing!
phonetic 11-14-06, 03:05 PM ... :bugeye:
Fruit smoothies are great, but they're a bit of a pain in the neck to make. If I had a decent enough blender, I'd probably just throw whole fruits in there and drink the skin too, but as it is it takes a long time to prepare and clean up.
It's pretty unhealthy, but it's quick and tasty -
Grab a frying pan, put a reasonable splodge of sunflower/corn oil in there.
Cut/hack/eat a drink can sized hole in the bread. Stick the bread in the pan. Crack an egg in the hole. Flip once the bottom browns. Serve when other side browns.
Another one with rice that I enjoy. Might not be to everyones taste -
Make some rice. Fold a piece of bread, like a taco. Stuff the rice in. Add some kind of sauce - I like tomato, but I'm sure you could use anything.
Toasted sandwich machines are all good. My mate made me lunch one day and I've stolen his 'recipe'. Bread as usual for the toasty machine, but don't butter it (maybe add a little to the outside of the bread or some oil), bit of ham and then pile it up with baked beans. Lid down and away you go. Watch out for burnt lips though. Those beans are superheated.

anyhow, what's the difference between normal and steel cut oats?

that's why you have chubby fingers.

The iron filings.
phonetic 11-14-06, 03:29 PM Filings?
Iron's good for you or are we talking nasty fat chunks of iron that break your teeth?
francois 11-14-06, 04:29 PM that's why you have chubby fingers.
Hey, I'm not a small dude. I require a lot of food just to maintain what I have. I'm about 6' 1" and weigh about 195 lbs. I can do 16 pull ups. How many can you do?
Here's one I invented last week:
Grate some raw potatoes, add some microwave-molten butter (to prevent browning, make it stick together, and allow frying), fashion into little pancakes and fry on a pan. Salt and pepper. Add hamburger meat and chopped onions to taste.
Dee-LEE-cious!
Nikelodeon 11-14-06, 04:48 PM I can do 16 pull ups. How many can you do?
I can pull up 30 KFC buckets more than your piddly 16.
Fraggle Rocker 11-14-06, 05:08 PM Buy a package of boned chicken thighs or breasts. Cut them into "fingers." Buy a package of stuffing mix. Grind it up fairly fine in your coffee grinder. Roll the fingers in the powdered stuffing until they're thoroughly coated, every nook and cranny. Bake the whole batch at once. Because the pieces are so small it will go pretty quickly at a fairly low oven temperature. Throw the entire batch into the freezer.
When you're hungry, pull out as many fingers as you feel like eating and toss them in the microwave. Since they're so small you won't have to mess around with defrosting first and then cooking. Just nuke 'em and they'll be ready in a couple of minutes.
-------------------
I also like cheese and peanut butter sandwiches. One of those can be a real belly full of food if you're really hungry and really lazy. With plenty of protein, unlike some of the Starchy Fantasies you folks have been eating. I bet you've eaten peanut butter cheese crackers out of the vending machine and liked them, so why not this way? You get to keep your favorite kinds of peanut butter, cheese and bread in stock.
-----------------------
Most cooked pasta will keep pretty well in the fridge for a week or ten days. Choose something like penne that comes apart easily, rather than long noodles like linguine or capellini. Make up the whole batch and store it.
Scoop out a bowl full, cut up a cooked sausage of your favorite type, pour out part of a jar of Italian sauce of any of a hundred varieties, and nuke it.
------------------
Buy a GT Express Cooker off the internet or one of the shopping channels on TV. It's only thirty or forty dollars and it really is a wonder. You can stuff a pita pocket or fold a tortilla with anything you want, and it will cook up schwarmas or tacos in a few minutes, with easy clean-up.
---------------------
I love oats but I'm one of the many people who can't digest it well. You wouldn't want to be around me for the next few hours.
Wow, that's brilliant. Maybe I'll start doing that. Good fiber, carbs, not much fat but still some, good protein. Good balance of energy nutrients. I've heard flax seed is excellent for you too. Do you feel any different now that you're pounding these down pretty frequently? Any weight gains?
If you want more protein, you can always add another scoop of whey. I used chocolate flavor because vanilla didn't taste as good. With the PB in there, it takes just like a peanut butter chocolate :)
When I make them, I make a big batch of it.. like 800 calories... all balanced in carbs/fat/protein. That makes about 1/4-1/3 of what I need for the day in terms of calories. I'll drink the first half for breakfast and the second half for lunch or dinner...
It's a great weight-gainer for lazy people such as myself. Drinking this when I wake up perks me up quickly. And it will hold me for 2-4 hours. However, I am trying to lose some weight so I am not drinking it for weight-gain. Drinking it for breakfast helps boost my metabolism (almost any breakfast will do the same.. but this is easier and cheap).
I added the flax seed because for many years I realized my Omega-3's were lacking.. and I learned flax seed is one of the best sources (next to eating fish.. but I hate fish). I've been taking it for only a week, but I am slowly noticing my mood rising and my memory slowly getting better. I have a history of mood swings, depression, attention problems, and just about everything else. Omega-3 has been shown to essentially reverse these if the lack of them is the cause. I know I pretty much got ZERO for years.
And the flax seed does not change the taste of it at all.. so you wouldn't even notice it :)
Fraggle Rocker 11-14-06, 11:28 PM Grind your flaxseed into powder for each meal. It's not very digestible otherwise. It's highly sensitive to light and needs to be stored in a dark place. We buy it in 50 lb. sacks for about $125 from a place in the Dakotas. We give it to our dogs too.
Are you grinding your flaxseed into powder? It's not very digestible otherwise. Don't forget that it's highly sensitive to light and needs to be stored in a dark place.
I grind them up the best I can.. the blender seems to do a better job than I can. When it's all done, the flax seed is in small little peices... it looks the same as the flax you can buy grounded up for you, but for $2-$3 more.
And yes, the package is zip locked and in a pantry.
Prince_James 11-15-06, 12:15 AM If you live in America, "The Rachel Ray Show" in the morning has plenty of quick, easy-to-make, cheap recipes.
Raithere 11-15-06, 12:16 AM Chocolate gruel? Toad in a hole? Rice sandwich? Good god you people need help… ;)
Boil some water, toss in enough spaghetti (or any other pasta) for one serving.
While the pasta is cooking dice 3 ripe roma tomatoes and a handful of kalamata olives.
Finely chop 5 leaves fresh basil and a small clove of garlic.
Mix the ingredients with 2 tbs extra virgin olive oil.
Drain and rinse pasta. Toss with the mix. Top with a bit of grated Romano.
Cooking time: 15 minutes.
Note: If you make the tomato mix ahead of time and leave it at room temperature for a couple of hours it tastes even better.
Same thing as above, except instead of pasta lightly toast some sliced Italian bread, top with the tomato mix above and some good prosciutto.
Buy a broiled chicken at the store.
Remove the skin, cut off chicken breasts and thighs; shred the meat with your fingers.
Throw in a deep skillet at med-high heat.
Add a jar of salsa, some sliced jalapeños, about ½ a pack of taco seasoning, and a dash of bacon bits.
Stir and cook until fluid is boiled off (you can pour some off if you’re really in a rush).
Serve on warm tortillas with cheddar cheese and sour cream.
Works well with black beans (though they take a bit longer)
Cooking time 20 – 30 mintues.
5 slices stale bread (if you don’t have any put fresh slices in warm (not hot) oven for about 10 minutes).
Heat skillet to medium.
Beat 1 cup cream, 1 tsp vanilla, 2 eggs, 1/8 tsp cinnamon.
Pour mix into a flat bottom bowl (a small cake dish will do).
Dip bread into mix, coating both sides, about 10 seconds each side.
Butter skillet (or use cooking oil, or even nothing if you have Teflon).
Cook bread on each side until golden brown (2 – 3 minutes per side).
Cooking time: 15 - 30 minutes depending of size of skillet.

Cooking time: 15 minutes.
That isn't quick :(
And my shake tastes great! Much much better than any garbage from McDonalds. And it's better for you!
I'll try out your idea when I have all the stuff. Thanks.
Yeah, he says "Quick food ideas" and now all this talk just makes me want to throw in a t.v. dinner.

LOL. Yes, it's quick. But not the best food :)
phonetic 11-15-06, 01:32 PM I like cost effective... alright, cheap meals.
Acorn shells handpicked by disabled gypsies from the South Pacific and other such fancy things tend to be expensive. A good quick meal, in my book, is tasty, cheap and made from easily obtainable goods.
Tonight I'm having pasta, with cocktail sausages and mascarpone sauce.

Try Mc Donalds.
tablariddim 11-15-06, 02:29 PM Pita sandwich 1)
3-4 slices bacon in a pyrex dish cover with kitchen paper and cook for 1 minute on high in microwave. Slice up a nice tomato and 1 or 2 hot chilies and stuff the whole lot into hot pita bread--no need for butter. If you're feeling flush you can perhaps add a small handful of cashew nuts. D lish.
Pita sandwich 2)
3-4 medium thick slices of halloumi cheese, grill on both sides until lightly golden, sliced tomato and chilies. Spread a couple of teaspoons of pesto in a hot pita and stuff it with the cheese, tomato and chili. D fuckinlish.
Pita sandwich 3)
A few thin slices of kefalotyri, a few thin slices of lounza ham, a few chunks of rocquefort or other blue cheese, 3 sundried tomatos, 1 sliced fresh tomato, chilies, hot pita with pesto spread. Fucking hell that's good!
You can get halloumi, kefalotyri, lounza and pita bread in your local Greek deli or maybe in a really good supermarket. If you don't like tomato, that's your problem, but you can substitute with cucumber, lettuce or rocket leaf. If you don't like chilies, it will still taste great but without the kickkkk.
Accompany with a glass ot two of Merlot.
tablariddim 11-15-06, 02:44 PM Beans and tuna.
Take a can of tuna or salmon, drain the oil or water and add a tablespoon of olive oil, 2 teaspoons lemon juice, some chopped flat leaf parsley and half a small chopped onion. Mix up without mashing the fish (just cut into chunks).
Take a can of cannelini or black eyed beans, drain the water and cook for a few minutes with some cubed courgettes or other small squash in fresh slightly salted water. When squash is al dente, drain the water and add some olive oil and lemon juice. Serve with the tuna or salmon salad. Soul gratifyingly good food. Don't forget the chilies mmm!

Nikelodeon 11-15-06, 03:38 PM Potato waffles with cheese, under a grill for 3 mins. Add a few leaves oflettuce and its a great snack.
Quick potato salad:
Dice a large potato into small pieces. Heat a cup of water till its boiling, add the potato cover and cook for a few minutes, turn off the flame and keep it covered while you chop a small onion and a green chilly finely. As soon as the potatoes are softened, drain the excess water and mash them roughly with a fork add the onion, chilly, salt and a teaspoon of mustard oil. Yum! (if you don't like mustard oil, you can use butter, cream or sesame seed oil)
Spicy tuna:
Drain a can of tuna. In a non-stick pan, heat some oil, fry some onion, garlic, ginger and tomato with green chillies. Then add the tuna and saute the lot till its dry, takes 2-3 minutes. Put it in a soft roll (or in a pita) and its a great sandwich.
Quick roast chicken:
Take some bite sized chicken pieces or chicken lollipops (as I call the lower half of the leg) and add a few spoons of yoghurt, some fresh ground black pepper and salt to it. I like lots of pepper (for the kick). Preheat the oven, put the chicken pieces on a greased tray and roast for 15-20 minutes. Yum!
Shrimp stir fry.
Roughly chop some onion and garlic. Heat some oil in a wok, on high heat saute the onion, garlic, add some diced tomatoes (canned is fine), some shrimp, mushrooms, carrot juliennes,(or whatever veggies you like- I add about half a cup of vegetables to half a cup of shrimp). Stir it a couple of minutes, add soy sauce, black pepper and salt. Lower the flame and cover and steam for about 2-3 minutes.
If you feel like soup instead of stir fry, add a cup of chicken or vegetable broth and some udon noodles. Takes about 10 minutes. You can also use chicken instead of the shrimp.
