Why does this site not have the quick reply hack installed? It would save bandwidth.

because it's a forum.....;) ask the creator for further questions...good luck;)

Yeah, I know. It's a forum powered by vBulletin that would be cheaper to run and easier to use if the quick reply hack was installed, it just confuses me that it hasn't been already.

talk to the sci-god about it if you want.

I don't know, everyone would post about 8 times more per day than they usually do(I know I would), is that a good thing?

I believe the quick reply function you speak of is bad UI. Thats just my opinion.
In my experience the more hacks you add the more unstable the board becomes.

What exactly is the "quick reply hack"? I've never heard of this.

Hacks are aftermarket codes that are installed by the board administrator. This particular hack that is being referred to looks something like the screenshot i have attached and makes a feild appear at the bottom of threads, this means you do not have to click 'post reply' but instead use the feild at the bottom of the thread. It can either be set for only members viewable or viewable by all. Its basic and doesnt have any formating buttons hense 'Quick Reply'.

I kind of have to go with the captain. It's just more stable and professional to stick with what we have. No bells and whistles (I'm obsessed with k-meleon now, you see).

Of all the forums I've been on, I'd have to say 'sciforums' has been the most dynamic and pretty. Don't change a good thing.

agrees. change is bad.

How about a forum jump feature? Porfiry had his say on this but what do you think?

VB 3.0 is coming imminently, so there's not much point in hacking up the board at this immediate time.

'hacking up' is a good term, it does hack it up. lol, i like that.

Speaking while angry, or overemotional, or frustrated ... many of us do it, and I'm not claiming clean sheets on this one. Frankly, an extra mouse click doesn't seem to be a problem.

Porfiry ... on a whim I checked to see your .Mac homepage ... did you intend for the xLife address to not be hyperlinked? (Safari may be a beta, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't miss that ....) ;)

Don't anyone get the wrong idea, quick reply is a freaking awesome feature.
To the simple members the only affect it would have on us is a positive one and that is being able to read a thread and then just type want you want to say at the bottom. Its pretty cool.

Tiassa  An extra mouse click is an extra page load, which is bandwidth that must be paid for. Also, as a vB admin myself, quick reply doesn't add any instability or compatibility problems at all. People seem to be quite hostile to the hack, when in fact it's loved by all the users at all the forums I post at, and it's the very first thing my users requested. I was only suggesting, but those in power have spoken. I'm assuming the people with lots of posts and avatars are those in power?

I'm assuming the people with lots of posts and avatars are those in power? To be honest, I hadn't realized it was a hack. I had just figured it was part of the software that Dave didn't want to use, but then, I have many quiet myths about this place.

But the people with lots of posts are just people with lots of posts; the avatars are paid for by the posters, and I think the mods get them in exchange for their services.

And the balance between paid users and others is unclear. While I understand how their needs could take priority, I'm probably the guy they're waiting to get some money from and nobody bugs me about it. (Interestingly enough, I've gotten away with not having a real job for over a year now, and raising my daughter hasn't yet become difficult enough for me to stop having a good time at it, and given the way I keep a house, I can't call my life "real work" at this time, either; the only downside is having no purchasing power.)

But ... my new camera just arrived, so I have to go play with that. (Something about purchasing power? Don't ask.)

You are innacurate in saying that there is only one effect and it is an awsome one. Adding hacks increases instability because in general they are not tested enough with the standard code and therefore increases the risk that they will be incompatible with other hacks installed. Also, the Quick reply hack makes the 'whos online' feature invalid in that it does not display people that are typing up replys using the Quick Reply hack, who's online instead displays: user is viewing a thread when infact they are typing up a reply thats why i believe its bad UI. O.k, its a good idea if your trying to save on bandwidth ill give you that. :)

I for one have lost intrest in other boards becouse they changed format to quickly. I enjoy interacting with other minds and that gets sticky when one changes formats to quickly.

I will agree when I can see how it will make thoughts clearer or assimilation faster.
