can someone please explaine to me the difference between a small "L" liberal and a left wing ideal?

You always hear labor people talking about small L liberals in the Liberal party and last night i was even lissioning to nick minchion talking about how the liberal party had both sides of the english system, ie the small L liberals and the concervitives.

"Small-L" liberals believe in the free market, but are socially progressive. This distinguishes them from conservatives, who believe social mores need preservation.

I'm not sure, but the term "small-L" may be a distinctly Australian one, to distinguish those of a liberal persuasion from members of the Liberal Party, which of course also contains conservatives. You can be a small-L liberal and be a member of the Labor Party. In fact, many Labor members are exactly that.

One the other hand, true left-wingers tend to think that markets ought to be highly regulated by governments. At the extreme, the communists believe that private property is a bad idea, and all property should be communal.

Libertarians in the US do the same thing in attempt to draw a line between the pragmatists and extremists.

E3R we have a political party called the Liberal party which recived its name when the Australian conservitive party and the Australian liberal party merged in order to win goverment from Labor (please dont ask what year that was, i would have to dig it up).

Its actually funny when you hear someone from the BBC being interviewed and talking about small L librals because they know how our system works:p
