    Mark Twain said:

"Put all your eggs in the one basket and watch that basket."

Obviously, this can be understood as a metaphor -- for what?
    What does this mean?

I merely guess that means something like listing all problems you may have in life and supervise all of them together, rather than doing one problem one day, think about another tomorrow... Bad guess I think ^_^

Actually it was stated as ,

"It is the part of a wise man to keep himself today for tomorrow, and not venture all his eggs in one basket." The author wasn't Twain but... Sancho Panza .

Because if you didn't use a basket, they would all fall down and break. You can't just hover eggs in midair!!! I have to tell you this?

I believe they're two different quotes, and they're saying totally opposite things, probably Twain's is a response to the first.

The second meaning: don't invest everything in one thing, spread your wealth out, better your odds.

The first meaning: it's ok to do that, but if you completely invest yourself in the maintainence of your basket full of eggs.

    No?
