In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the incredible and true story of legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Depp), the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover's fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. Source: Universal Pictures.

No one could stop Dillinger. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone: from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But while the adventures of Dillingers ganglater including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaws capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger Americas first Public Enemy Number One. Hoover sent in Purvis (Bale), the dashing Clark Gable of the FBI. However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) who were real gunfighters, and orchestrating epic betrayals (from the infamous Lady in Red to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nittiwere) were Purvis and the FBI able to close in on Dillinger.

I was waiting to see this movie since it came out. I love Johnny Depp and Christian Bale is up on my list too. From the previews I thought it looked really good.

Well, I saw it last night and I have to say I was disappointed.

It wasn't nearly as good as I thought it was going to be. I found that I really didn't give a shit what happened to the characters in the movie. I didn't hate anyone, route for anyone, feel sorry for anyone etc. I honestly really didn't care.

It was an ok movie, but I was expecting a lot more. It wouldn't be a movie that I would watch over and over in the future. Now Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, that is a movie I will watch over and over and probably never bore of.

Anybody else see it and wanna share what they thought?

Same opinion. Watchable but indifferent to the characters. Also, the story was slightly changed here and there, compared to real life. Finding out the motel was actually more interesting in real life. It wasn't the FBI guy's torture, but the motel owners (who were followed by the gang members) managed to send a mail to the authorities. Those idiots shot 3 civilians before the real shooting started...

But yes, an average film at best...

It could have been more gripping, yeah, but then they would have had to depart from reality more than they already did, and then it wouldn't be about John Dillinger, but a caricature of him. It passed the time.

I saw it yesterday and I liked it.

It was basically Heat, but in the 1930s (which makes sense, since Michael Mann directed both Heat and Public Enemies) - a character-driven story that had intermittent scenes of good action/shootouts.

I would have liked more shootouts, but I can say the same about almost every movie.

Huh? How can you not rate Johnny Depp as an actor?

I think he can pull off most roles that nobody else could.
You didn't think he was a good Captain Jack Sparrow?

Did you ever see Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? He was brilliant!

Ever see ED Wood? Where he plays a woman that loves angora sweaters? It was such an odd character that I doubt many could pull off.

    I could go on..........

It's odd that there was a a movie released seemingly a short while ago that was basically identical with respect to a bank robber being very sensationalized and popular with the public and such and conversely the "man who brought him down". Does anybody remember this?

My daughter has all his films from "Cry Baby to all the pirates films" and i dont like him,

And has jack sparrow, god no!! He was awful, and i finaly saw fear and loathing and thought it was drivel, and frankly a waste of time, (but that is just my opinion), i just dont think he's all that good,

Oh, come on, the character 'Jack Sparrow' was comedy genius, and Depp ahd a lot of input creating that unique character, and with his dialogue.

We already had the classic 'Avaste me hearties!' type Pirate played brilliantly by Geoffrey Rush, and that movie needed a new kind of pirate, and we got exactly that; something we had never seen before.

Oh yeah, and like Shorty said, 'Ed Wood' was yet another character very few asides Johnny could have pulled off.

many actors get awards that some people cannot see why, i said it was an opinion and my opinion in my eyes still stands, i cannot/will not be forced into liking someone who i think isnt very good, so FUCK OFF stupid, because it was just my opinion

By the way moron, nobody wanted to force you to like him. If you don't like him, why do you keep watching his movies???

I am sure the movie's incorrectness was also Depp's fault.

Hint: There is a person called director in moviemaking.

P.S.: The thread is about Public Enemies and not Depp, so I am done with his accomplishments.

I guess you feel the way about Depp as I do let's say Keanu Reeves. I can't stand that guy and I try to avoid movies that he is in because it ruins it for me.

I see. So you have to watch movies that you don't like, and because it frustrates you, you bitch about the actors. Understandable, but unacceptable.

There is such a thing as a stupid opinion. Like yours. Look, 99.5% of people disagrees with you, so you are either a genius or a moron going against the mainstream view.

And you are no genius, my dear, so that leaves us with one conclusion only...

But that is enough of you, Depp is an excellent actor, judged by both his movies success' and by his awards. End of story...( and that is not an opinion, but FACT)
