Theres a bill going to congress that would effectively make right wing fundementalism the official state religion. Keep in mind that contributions to religious organizations are tax deductable, this bill would make it possible to funnel untold tax deductible $$ to candidates with a right wing fundamentalist agenda. Rep. Walter B. Jones, Jr. new bill, H.R. 2357, the “Houses of Worship Political Speech Protection Act,” will not fly. In fact, the churches themselves will not support the bill. If the church openly endorses a candidate, an association with all the views and actions of that candidate is implied. And what happens when a candidate, having been elected, becomes embroiled in an ethics question, or even a scandal? Churches need to be able to retain their voices as the conscience of society, and their integrity could be compromised by association with wrongdoing.
What you say about open endorsement may or may not be true, however funneling millions of dollars picked from the pockets of sub normal sheep to a candidate who wanted to for instance make prayer mandatory in schools or ban abortion wouldnt require open endorsement. Also I dont think they'd blink at endorsing one of their own, do you? Would you like to see a Pat Robertson or a Jerry Fallwell as president?
