The problem with this site is a conversation can only get off the ground if we all have a "common experience". For example, if we were all reading the same book, say Hearts of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, we could probably make a good discussion out of it, but there are so many topics and they are so vast that it is hard to have a serious discussion about anything. That and the fact that maybe people here just want to goof around and do not want to say anything serious or understand things with any depth.

fredx, how do you have a discussion on a subject, if participants didnt have that "common experience" and dont know what they're talking ab? on the other hand i agree some just fool around. like on that psychic forum, if you dont believe in that stuff, why keep posting there the same thing over and over?

It is by your very actions that you initiate that which you hate. I bet this will become just another flame war. That is what discussion on the Internet is. Everyone has more confidence when they are just typing away on the Internet than they do in real life. SO most conversations are like Rams butting heads over and over.

It's human nature, and human nature is what structures the Internet. It's that simple.

That's why most of the time people with common experience are the ones who post comments. Sure there are a few people who just post crap, but you just have to overlook those people.

You made me laugh dude I have to give you that.

As for changing the title, I porbably would, how about:

"The Metaphysical Power of the Common Experience" that is taking that comma out which I don't know if you put in on purpose or not.

It sounds like an interesting name for a dissertation or something.

It sounds interesting, if you can say something interesting about it, I will be sure to respond.

    It wasn't always this way...
Sciforums wasn' t like this at all when I started coming around. It had a lot of people with cool ways of looking at things, it was more like brainstorming.

...enter a few "enlightened" 16-year olds...

Now it seems like everyone here is trying to impress everyone else by disguising boring ideas with flowery language. People are posting more boring and pointless threads, ESPECIALLY in free thoughts. Free thoughts, while definitely the lighter side of sciforums, used to be at least somewhat thought provoking. It seems like a lot of people are simply trying to create a thread that will generate 30+ replies for the purpose of an ego boost. That and they're trying to increase their amount of posts.

    ...yet i can't stay away...

    ...*sigh*

All you have ever done here is post controvercial/provoking statements, criticise spelling/punctuation and boast about yourself. Maybe you just dont want to have actual serious conversations or understand anything in depth. I find your post style entriguing (sp), its as if you are purposefully try to get people to disagree with you or start flaming you... i dont know if you do this on purpose.

When i first came to sciforums there was hardly any complaining of any sort of the running of the site, now it is rife here. There is the different factions that use the site, the mods and the members. The members are split into different factions again where the moderators remain united - and so it should be. Different factions of members are the people that think free thoughts is a waste of bandwidth and those who dont. Those who complain and those who dont. Those who take everything as a piss take, those who take things seriously. Finally, there are the users who come and post now and again with quality posts and those who post alot of pointless/stupid posts just to get the post count up. These posters are the ones who make the site look as if its a lot of crap but if you dig hard enough you will find there still is some meaningful discussion.

It seems to me, the places to stay away from is Free Thoughts and World Events and Politics. I think there are still some worthwhile threads in each but you will have to tread a fine line from being banned in each. WE&P is full of flaming and Free Thoughts is full of useless posts. I still sift through each for the quality discussion like this thread here.

    Cheers.

I post what I feel and think to be the truth. I don't do it to piss people off or to be controversial. I don't care if people don't agree. It was Socrates that said that it matters more that you agree with yourself than if everyone else in the world disagrees with you. So take that as you may.

Oh also, people do use the free thoughts catagory to take a metaphorical "brain dump". It is alright to throw in a few silly topics here and there but when the whole free thoughts board is full with nonsense it gets rather depressing for me anyway, its like a subtle and lowly form of belligerence towards the other posters.

1.) Do you ever wander outside Free Thoughts?
I don't think this is evident on this site, just this once section of this site.

2.) A big part of conversing with someone is to share experiences with each other and learn new things.
If you were to talk about "Hearts of Darkness" and I never read it, you could talk about it. What it was about. Why you liked/disliked it. What books are of a comprable style. Etc. I have read a number of books based on what people have told me about them. Similarly I have convinced a number of people to read certain books based on what I have said about them.

The interesting thing about meeting people is to learn things that you DON'T know.
Not just jabber on about things you DO know.

Maybe the hope of getting nice candy is better than eating the candy and getting a bellyache.

I return frequently to sciforums with the hope of seeing candy posts. A lot of them look nice, but taste sour or are too minty. And I don't like eating the same candy every day.

nah, i am just joking with you, I kind of know what you are saying.

    to One Raven:
the thing is that I try to go where I think I am needed. Most of the sections are crowded with thoughts and they don't need my help. When I started on here i mostly wrote in phil. posts, but now I mostly post in arts and culture and free thoughts, although I do have a thread open in general science that you can check out.

While I generally agree with everything you said in the second part, I also think that life is short and if we have both read the book, then our conversations will probably be more efficient and productive, as opposed to me telling you a fabulous story that you could have taken in faster on your own. However, it can be a matter of taste, judgment and need as well. For example, you may not be interested enough to read a book and you may be happy if I just tell you about it. Many factors come into play.
