It's not my fault. I went to my appointment-I'm doing this DBT stuff very new agey. We had the normal banter.... then he said I needed to allow my thoughts to do what they do. I had to stop him. Thoughts don't 'do' anything. Manipulation of the thoughts cause them to react in ways, but if left alone, they simply accumulate. They are more like lego blocks. You can combine them, you can seperate them. You can sort them. If left alone they will not do anything. The appointment ended with me promising to try to allow a thought to do something on it's own. A side issue we briefly touched... He wants me to let new thoughts come into my head without judging them. 1. new thoughts? 2. come into my head-from outside of my head? 3. without judging them-so I should let thoughts of murder just sit around in my head without doing something with them? Anywho, is this quibbling over nothing on my part? Or do me and mental health professionals differ about basic things?
It's actually easy, and sometimes fun. And if you think about it, what you seem to enjoy with your alt-history is exactly that ...letting your thoughts wander without judgement. New thoughts? Sure, you have them whenever you see a picture in a magazine ...whenever you see a commercial on tv ...whenever you're watching a movie. Lot's of thoughts just "come into your head" from outside influences. Don't believe me? Look at the new centerfold in Playboy magazine ...that'll bring lots of new thoughts into your head! That's really what he was trying to get you to do, but he sure didn't explain it very well, did he?! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Baron Max
Ohhh-his saying not jusge them, was actually, view them objectively. That makes more sense. New thoughts-I view thoughts as constants, sensory input is variable. Like-having an empty container of thought regarding nude women. The sensory input of reading playboy would fill the container some. It will sit there until i do something with it. Obsessing over it would be to focus on this container of thought to the exclusion of all else. Ignoring it is simply putting the container back.
(Insert title here) I'm just curious, and have no reason to suspect one answer or another, but do you ever smoke pot? Okay, okay. I confess, there is a compulsion to suspect that you don't, but such vague suspicions, I know, are unreliable. The thing is, though, that most of the stoners in my circle of friends are capable of starting at whatever thought pops into their head, and just letting it do whatever it does. Their minds create certain associations, which give rise to other thoughts, and some of the more articulate people I've known, have been able to express significant aspects of the transformation. I would not recommend psilocybin, which can do the same thing, but by different pathways, and generally with more severe transitions. On the other hand, mild doses of psilocybin spiked with MAOIs have a massive antidepressant effect on my brain. Still, though, if you've any doubts about your immediate psychiatric stability, that route is best avoided. All I'm after is that when we suppress certain inhibitions, which can naturally come out of balance, the mind will do what it does without any specific act of will, and thoughts will do some fascinating things. I can't say whether it's quibbling on your part; I don't see the world with your eyes, and do not perceive it with your brain. I can only offer you, then, these paltry words as well as my best wishes. Chin up, sunshine and smiles, and all that sort of shit. Hang in, Hamtastic.

I have smoked pot, but can't say I had new thoughts because of it. I did manipulate thoughts in unusual ways, but I didn't experience any 'new' thoughts.
