Well, if it wasnt for the damn full moon, my observing las night would have lasted quite a bit longer. I pulled out my 10" scope after recognizing how awesome the oppurtunity was. No power at all and the sky lit up with stars. You could even see the milky way. I mean it was like a trip into the past when there werent any lights, but you were still in a large city. Anyway, I just looked at Mars, M57 (Ring Neb.) and M56 (Glob. in Lyra).

You know, you actually make me wish for a power outage in my area, but Texas more or less has it's own power grid and even has a surplus amount of power we ship into neighboring states. A major disaster would have to hit us before we loose the juice down here.

Makes me happy I live out in the country, always 10 minutes away from an open field and no light pollution.

Some New Yorkers saw stars last night for the first time in their lives!!! How sad!

NY Kid: "mommy mommy what are those funny little lights in the sky?"

NY Mother: "Oh hum I think they are more hijackers"

The saddest funny joke I ever heard.

To take it a small stage further, how many New Yorkers would recognise a star from a planet? Last night I was standing outside looking up at Mars. I bet that at least 75% of New Yorkers have only seen stars etc from books/video/sci fi films.

No seriously, NYers go camping, they go out of the cities, they have seen the stars!

It was actually a commentator on tv that said it originally. I thought it was maybe stretching a point too far, but I bet that a grain of truth lay in there. Where I live is on the fringes of the second largest city in the UK, Birmingham. Here we can see loads of stars but nowhere near what I saw when at my sisters, on top of a hill, in Cornwall. The entire milky way, invisible where I live, was spread out before my eyes - amazing! I could even see, with the naked eye, 3 of jupiters moons.
