How far are things going to go in the new regime? Why are posts in a thread that was trash to start with deleted? What's the point? When there is no proper topic to stick to, how are you meant to stay on topic? Are things going to get progressively worse? Are you planning on upping the ante in regard to 'off topic' posts? I'm not impressed. The thing that set sciforums apart from just about any other forum was the way that the community were allowed to take threads in different directions. If it was truly off topic and uncalled for, the person would be told or people would skim the post and continue the thread. Sometimes inane comments or seemingly 'off topic' posts revive legitimate threads and get more people in to further add to the discussion. What are your thoughts, people o' sciforums?
It appears that the mods may have had instructions to clean up their act and 'get on the case' that's why they may be acting a wee bit exuberantly enthusiastic. Still, some threads do deteriorate into shit, or long, drawn out slanging matches between 2 individuals, which no one else reads and are hardly worth keeping in my opinion. At the end of the day, the mods call is tough.
Admittedly in recent months Sciforums has seen a far greater number of threads that are either off-topic or just overall nonsense. This had been due to moderators having other things they have to attend to in their lives and probably meant they logged in every now and again just to get rid of the robot spam posts that appeared. Logically the changes to sciforums in both management and software has rekindled most of the moderators former connection with the forums and they've found their relevant forum section littered with these off-topic and non-sense ridden threads, so it's likely they are trying to clean up the forums a bit in comparison. I know some of you suggest how you "Like the forum the way it was" however most of you never joined the forums until after it's true hayday, so you actually joined during a deteriorated state not when it was at it's best when active moderation kept the cesspool filled. (And before that there was no cesspool) Since the forum software is likely to lower the number of Robots posting and the new management is likely to increase the ability to deal with trouble makers, obviously moderators time can be better spent moderating as apposed to just deleting spam, which in turn means some of the attacks that some of you have become use to throwing about will more than likely no longer be tolerated. Currently each moderator has their own ways of dealing with their current forum however it's up to the new management to either decide on letting them run how they were or creating an overall group of policies as a guideline.
I've been seeing goofyfish randomly deleting posts that are supposedly off topic, but they really are not.
