How much do you like popcorn? What do you like on it, if anything? When do you most like to eat popcorn?

Giambattista

I really like popcorn! In fact, I'm eating it right now! :xctd:

I use a dedicated popping kettle and have enjoyed this type of popcorn for many many years. Microwave popcorn pales in comparison to kettle popped! I have noticed that kettle popped corn retains a good flavor and freshness that lasts for a day or more. Microwave popcorn seems to taste pretty subpar within an hour of being popped, I have found.

Then there's always a hot air popper. Haven't seen one of those in ages, but used to be the only way we made popcorn when I was a kid.

I usually use a mixture of coconut oil and vegetable oil, like sunflower seed oil, though this time I used grape seed oil (didn't have sunflower oil at the store).

Tastes good.

I like popcorn at anytime, whether playing a game, watching tv or movies (which doesn't happen very often) or whenever. I usually eat it once or twice a week.

How do YOU feel about popcorn?

I feel indifferent when it comes to popcorn. It's not that I hate it, you know, it's just like whatevs.
I like how buttered popcorn smells, and I can recall enjoying it in the past to a degree, but I think my pallette has matured and I find the whole idea of popcorn very boring.

Lucifer's Angel, tell us more about how you put sugar or caramel on your popcorn, do you ever put both sugar and caramel?
I want to know more about your popcorn habits.
Giambattista I feel like I definately know more about your feelings towards popcorn than I did before I opened this thread, but if there's any more information you can provide I'd greatly appreciate it.

Also I think the poll should allow multiple selections, I honestly can't choose between these two;
* Popcorn is okay, but there are better snacks out there.
* I don't like popcorn very much. I rarely eat it.
Seriously, I just can not choose, they are both perfect.

what i do is, warm a LITTLE cooking oil in a pan, then add some sugar, then add the pop corn kurnels, then just put the lid on the pan and shake the pan and cook them.

the caramel popcorn is made by melting some chunks of toffees in a LITTLE cooking oil and then adding the corn, and cooking like normal,

or you can do what my friend does, she just buys the microwave pop corn in a bag and its ready in minutes, but i prefer it cooked by me on a stove!

Simply the best! I have only a few unpopped kernnels everytime I pop Orville Redenbacher's Popcorn. It is also the best tasting I've eaten . I use sunflower oil to pop them with. Sometimes I'll use olive oil but the sunflower oil tastes and smells so much better! :)

Hmm. When in the mood for savory popcorn, I wait just until that first kernel pops. Quickly throw in a bit of fine chili powder, shake it all about and let the corn dance commence. Once all popped, add some salt and a generous amount of Brie cut into small pieces.

Sweet popcorn...melt some butter, add some honey and throw it over the popcorn, once its popped, small splashes at a time (a good shake between each splash).

Lou Natic: Senior Popcorn Researcher.

Anyway, I mentioned the other day olfactory cons: things that smell wonderful but taste of... nothing.

Meat is one such thing (as in the pre-packaged, shop-bought stuff - I'm told that freshly-dead venison tastes nice). Popcorn is another.

I've never used this word before, because it's silly but... meh..

so, when a poll ends up in Cesspool, it dies??

My kids eat microwave popcorn about 4x a week. Every once in a while I'll get out the popper and make it myself. I only use white kernels. They pop smaller and crunchier. The old maids are my favorite and I wish stores would sell them right next to Corn Nuts.

Why the HECK was this poll moved to the cesspool???
As far as I'm concerned, this thread is much more serious and pertinent to real life than most of the other stuff found in the Cesspool.

After all, the sub-forum this was originally in is entitled "Free Thoughts" which is described as a place for "random ideas, thoughts, trivialities".
Among the subjects deemed more important than this one about popcorn is one about whether shoes are compulsory or not http://www.sciforums.com/showthread.php?t=81075.

Is the question of whether or not you enjoy popcorn, and how you enjoy it, any more or less trivial than that???

Giambattista

Giambattista I feel like I definately know more about your feelings towards popcorn than I did before I opened this thread, but if there's any more information you can provide I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm guessing you've been pulling your hair out waiting for me.

First of all, it is really stupid that this thread was moved to the cesspool, because popcorn is one of the most popular snacks in the US, and can be found around the world. Why a discussion about personal attraction or aversion to this staple snack belongs in a so-called "cesspool" is beyond my comprehension.

Second of all, about my love for popcorn, I have little more that I can add to what I already said in the opening post.

I have had some Crisco vegetable oils once or twice that were really not very good. I believe it was the canola that gave it a noticeable off-flavor. It just wasn't right.
In the old days, when me and my brother would make microwave corn (as kids) we often like to melt margarine or butter and drizzle it on the popcorn for even more butter taste. I could never dream of eating that these days!!!:o

I have used Orville Redenbacher's butter flavored popping oil with the kettle, but now I mostly use coconut oil mixed with something else. I find that the combination of coconut oil and something like sunflower oil (which has a mild nut-like flavor) has the taste that I really enjoy most.
Either butter-flavored or regular popcorn salt (the fine ground kind) is acceptable as a salt-topping.

Of course, one can forego all of that and pop the corn plain. Ain't nothin wrong with that, I don't reckon.

Popcorn can also make me really thirsty. I drink various things with popcorn. I find a little orange juice actually goes quite well with it. Or cold water.
On that topic, I almost never drink carbonated sodas, unless I mix them with some alcohol. The exception is true ginger ale, like Reed's Ginger Brew. That stuff is great!:)

Here is a neat and informative article on popcorn from Wikipedia. Therefore, take everything with a grain of popcorn salt.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popcorn

Here is an intriguing excerpt from that article:

Popcorn was first discovered by the native Americans, who believed that the popping noise was that of an angry god who escaped the kernel.

Those silly natives!!! :p

Fucking hell, I just want to know more, much much more!!!

Calm down! No need for swearing... :runaway:

So far I've addressed regular popcorn. I have a few comments on other types.

Caramel corn: not bad, though not my favorite. It depends on my mood.
There is arguably one main commercially sold product that has caramel corn as the main ingredient, and that would be Cracker Jack. It is probably the oldest caramel corn product on the market, originating around the turn of the 20th century. Other successful candied popcorns include Fiddle Faddle, and Poppycock, both of which I have eaten before. Some of these have the addition of certain nuts (Cracker Jack has peanuts). It adds not only flavor and texture variety, but may well contribute to overall nutritional value, depending on the nut.
Can be a little chewy and sugary for my tastes. Somewhat more of a seasonal phenomenon, owing to the popularity of large, ornamental gift tins that one might receive during the holidays. Ice cream is another gift that comes in decorative, collectible tins, in case you've never seen those!

Cheese corn: Has its niche, and an interesting and well-deserved place it is! Not as commonly encountered as either regular oil/butter flavored popcorn or caramel corn, it nonetheless persists in one incarnation or another. Most often it will be seen in a regular sharp cheddar flavor, but others, such as white cheddar (a more mild flavored cheese) can be found. One can probably imagine combinations of cooking spices, such as garlic or onion powder, being a welcome and sensible addition to a powdered cheese topping. Perhaps at home it would be as simple as adding finely grated parmesan to final product. There are, conceivably, many flavors of cheese that would be suitable, and with different combinations of spice additives, perhaps a veritably endless variety of cheese corn recipes!

Makes me hungry!!! :yay:

Other flavors: Popcorn simply sprinkled with sugar (not caramelized) isn't my bag o' corn, if you get my meaning.
I have had popcorn flavored with garlic salt quite a few times (or garlic powder is fine). I have also had so-called "ranch" flavoring that actually comes pre-packaged in little salt shaker containers. Not sure what constitutes the "ranch" taste, but it's pretty darn tasty, if I recollect. Probably has MSG, too. Yay. I think there are quite a few decent and inventive ways to spice up your popcorn, and they're waiting for that adventurous soul to discover them.

Popcorn balls: Never cared for em, don't understand em, don't really want to try. They're especially unnerving when they have bizarre colors. I steer clear. If anyone out there actually likes the things, why don't you tell me about your experience, and why I'm wrong to be at odds with you "types"!

IS THIS POPCORN THREAD A JOKE TO YOU OR WHAT?!

Popcorn is an extremely serious subject where I come from.

Sorry that I neglected to mention colored popcorn. Never had it. I have seen the unpopped kind that has been dyed in whatever manner they do that, and as a child once, I thought it looked cool, but my father informed me that it doesn't taste all that great. Never seen it popped. I wonder if it actually retains those colors, or if you just end up getting mostly whitish popcorn with perhaps a pale tint?

Oh, sorry, maybe you call them popcorn balls. My mistake, carry on...

Popcorn balls are very often colored, probably a food dye added to the glaze that holds them together. Not very appealing in my experience.

I'm guessing the last one is definitely a dyed glaze.

And HERE is some actual popcorn, with the natural pigmentation peculiar to this cultivar (there exist quite a few subspecies of popcorn)...
http://gardeners.harrisseeds.com/data/sfproducts/1146.jpg

My uncle grew some once. Did NOT look like the typical stuff you buy commercially. Kernels were smaller, and not simply white or yellow.

A list of four heirloom cultivars can be found at the bottom of the corn listed on this site: http://www.heirloomseeds.com/corn.htm

I think my mom tried to grow some one time, and they didn't turn out right.
