Lately, whenever I switch on my computer and click on the sciforums short-cut icon, I would get at least one or two pop-up ads (and sometimes pop-under as well). I'm curious if anyone else is also seeing this. These ads seem to be getting a free ride. Is there any way to get around them?

Thats strange, I don't get any pop-ups on sciforums.

1119,

If you are seeing pop-ups you have gotten some spyware that is loading those popups as you surf the net.

Personally, I resent these freeloaders pilfering my bandwidth. You should go to download.com and download and install zonealarm. I have at least 3 or 4 of these programs trying to connect back to its homesite to load up the computer with ads and to pass its spyware on.

Wet1, How well does it work? Now that I'm actually getting the net at home, such things are of a concern.

Actually, it works very well. You must authorize every programs connection to the internet. Once you have done so for your browser, any other attempt to access the internet through a program will result in a popup asking if you want a program to be authorized to access the net. You may change these at anytime by going to the program and doing so. You will be alerted that this or that program is trying to connect and it will ask your permission for it to do so.

This program is basically a firewall that is transparent. I have had very little trouble with it. I have had the program for around 8 or 9 months. There is a freebee and there is the pro level that is to be purchased. The freebee does all that I need it to do.

I should mention this if you are not aware of it. Instant messenger service is a windows application that ad agencies have discovered how to use. They are a bit different than regular pop-ups as they will be distinglished by being grey on the background. If you are seeing this then refer to the nerd section on how to disable it.

Spybot has an immunize feature that silently blocks gator, bonzy, xupiter, etc. Perfect for Click-Yes-By-Default users.

Are they browser pop-ups? Or are they alarm pop-ups with adds in them, in which case you can turn them off in your control pannel.
