"A stripper, a bong, and tough issues, Stranger-style"
The Seattle Times carries an interesting article in its November 1, 2003 edition.Seattle City Council President Peter Steinbrueck posed for a photo with a bong in his hand. Heidi Wills sat on a photo of a newspaper columnist who has ridiculed the first-term councilwoman. And candidate Tom Rasmussen got a lap dance from a trench-coat-wearing stripper.
Those antics and more were on display at a council candidate "smackdown" sponsored by The Stranger, Seattle's cheeky weekly that's trying to put some fun into local politics . . . .
. . . . The next closest to a non-Stranger-backed candidate was Jack Pageler, who stood in for his wife, veteran Councilwoman Margaret, who was attending another event. Mr. Pageler suffered the indignity of being called "Margaret" repeatedly by Dan Savage, editor of The Stranger and master of smackdown ceremonies.
But Pageler took it well, even getting up and giving a buck to Rasmussen after a woman, identified as a stripper by Savage, gyrated in Rasmussen's lap, her bare tattooed shoulder — but not much else — exposed to the 200 or so people in the audience. The article is available at http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/election/2001780192_notebook01m.html
The website for The Stranger is http://www.thestranger.com
I'm looking around for an article from The Stranger, but I don't know if it will publish in time for the election..
Dan Savage's column can be read at http://www.thestranger.com/current/savage.html (Parental Guidance is advised against for the safety of the parents.)
But this is what's great about living up here. Our politicians aren't just ridiculous, but amazingly and entertainingly so.
