BRATISLAVA, Slovakia - Slovak police said Thursday they have identified as uranium the 2.2 pounds of radioactive material seized from three suspects who allegedly tried to sell it for $1 million.

Police spokesman Martin Korch could not say whether the seized material had been enriched to weapons-grade.

“I can confirm that it was uranium-235 and uranium-238,” he told The Associated Press.

Any terrorist organization willing to waste $1 million on a couple pounds of heavy metal is too retarded to be much of a threat IMO. Good police work though.

In most cases, aren't those with dual citizenship, people born of Russians parents, in the republics of the old Soviet Union? so wouldn't that make him a Russian?

NO...its the other way around. In most cases if not almost all people from southern countries born there flood Russia for their citizenship there. Most are rejected...but that doesnt stop them from living there. This guy was from Georgia...

AND NO THAT DOES NOT MAKE HIM RUSSIAN

No if he has Russian citizenship, that makes him Russian, and as you just pointed out ( Most are rejected) the only way it is granted is if the Parents are Russian citizens.

I have 3 Russian families living opposite me. One of them is considered SCUM by his next door neighbour who absolutely hates ALL Russians and has denounced his citizenship. The other one seems like a pretty nice guy.

It might as well be just another heavy metal though. The alphas produced by decay would be stopped by the bag carrying it. The binding energy deficit of uranium is so high that its spontaneous fission rate is very low, meaning that it isn't a gamma source in any appreciable manner either. Uranium, being a heavy metal, is chemically toxic to humans. It is metabolized in the kidneys and can lead to renal damage if consumed in insanely large quantities over a protracted period of time. Its hazards are basically the same as lead or mercury.

If it were really "weapons grade" fuel (>90% U235) I would be a lot more concerned because of the implications of the black market having access to HEU fuels. But the article is murky on that, and it is likely either natural uranium (0.3% U235) or the LEU fuel used around eastern Europe and Russia for their reactors (1-2% U235).

Also, I wish the media would stop playing up the threat of a dirty bomb because if one is ever used it will be some kind of weird self-fulfilling prophecy that will get everyone scared over almost nothing.

Russia needs throwing out of the UN until they stop selling uranium, i dont believe its all down to ex russian balkan states, russia knows everthing that goes on in its backyard, they hate the US & they know any dirty bomb would either target the US or the UK.

I am fucking sick of reading about russian uranium on the black market, if america threatened to sell uranium to checnyans, i guarantee you this every fucking ounce of uranium would be accounted for in 24 hours.

They are wankers or putin is.
