Curious: what's the point of the "Report" option if there's no follow-up by Mods??

There is if the point count gets high enough.

I always try to respond on serious reports and I'm sure moderators as well.

Could you be more specific?

If it was determined that what I reported wasn't serious enough (however that's determined...) then it would go without saying that I should have been notified of such.

I don't think it goes without saying.
Depending on how many reports are received, that could be a hell of a time consuming task to cater to each member's personal issues and what they personally take offense to.

There would be no point if there was no follow-up. But there is.

All reports are checked by moderators and admins.

If we sent messages saying whether action had been taken, and what the action was, to every person who reported a post, it would multiply our workload by about 10 times, I think.

What happens is that moderators look at the reports, they check the reported post, then they decide what action is appropriate (infraction, edit the post, deletion, move to the Cesspool, do nothing etc. etc.)

If nothing happens following a report, then there are two possible reasons:

(1) no moderator has seen the report yet.
(2) a decision has been made that no action is needed.

...

Then this needs to be made apparent.
Instead of literally contacting each person who makes use of the 'Report' option, why not create a log than can be viewed??

...

Which should be discussed with the person who made the 'Report'.

Seriously; I don't want to sound like an old fart who's been here for years, but the administration of this site has gone to shit over the past 2 years or so...

Not a bad idea, but I'm not sure how easy that would be to implement. I suspect it would still create more work for moderators, but then again, moderators could also make use of it.

I completely disagree with you. In fact, I think the adminstration of this site has improved immeasurably since the new owners took over. You may have noticed changes such as the encyclopedia, new subforums, multi-quote capability, additional moderators ... the list goes on.

reports are done by email, not PM so i only check them every second day at best. if i find anything wrong with the post in question i will deal with it accordingly, but a lot of the time people reprt posts just because they disagree with them. if someone seems quite passionate about their complaint(but i still dont agree) then i will send them a PM explaining it, but thats often not the case.

be assured that i am taking note of all reports in my subforum, but until plazma starts paying me im not going to spend hours sending a PM to everyone who clicks the report button :p

I have noticed these changes; all of which I consider to be superfluous, useless, or just pointless.

Perhaps my sentiment has a more sociological source however: those of us who have been here long enough can easily recognize that the 'average character' of the majority of posters here has spiraled into idiocy over the past few years.

It used to be the case that during a discussion, when faced with a contrarion position, one would interact with the disputant, towards some resolution, or where not possible, some sort of agreeable conclusion. Nowadays, we're faced with moronic excuses for 'arguments' (sic), if not outright personal abuse. Sad, sad days...

So, given my musings here, and this is thanks to you James R, I hereby retract my admonishment of the current Mods; clearly, they cannot be held responsible for the intelligence and/or behaviour of the members of the site.
