"Toronto theatre won't stage My Name is Rachel Corrie
Toronto's Canadian Stage Company has decided not to stage My Name is Rachel Corrie, the controversial play about an American peace activist killed by an Israeli bulldozer.

It was a decision based on the play's merits, rather than the political controversy that dogs it, CanStage artistic producer Martin Bragg said in an interview with CBC.ca.

"It was an artistic decision," said Bragg, who saw the play in New York. "It just didn't work on stage."

Based on the diaries of U.S. activist Rachel Corrie, who died trying to stop the Israeli army from destroying a Palestinian house, the play chronicles her life as an adolescent and young woman.

The play has been divisive since it was first produced in London earlier this year, with supporters admiring its depiction of young woman developing strong political convictions and others saying Corrie was naive and misguided.

A New York theatre decided against staging the play this spring, after Jewish groups said it expresses anti-Israeli sentiments."

First of all, for the people who call her naive, those idiots are just old people who discriminate against youth.

Second, who cares the play makes Israelis look bad? They WERE killing innocent people. Of course, so do Palestinians, but that is beside the point! Calling the play "one-sided" is stupid because the play is based on Rachel's subjecive perspective. It is not intended to be an objective exploration of the issue.

The play is art, designed to make people alk about the issue. It must not be censored.

Truthseeker: did you miss this bit?
Just because it's right-on doesn't necessarily make it good. He may be lying of course, but still..

The fact that this is theatre makes the whole thing problematic

It is an artistically challenging show:

The play does have a history of creating artistic conflict:

One thing we might note from the topic article:

And it's true. There are some great films, plays, and novels out there that don't find strong attendance for the simple fact that they are depressing. That the play moves to tears and reflection what audiences it finds is, indeed, near the heart of its artistic merit. But the potential in 2006 for recognizing this merit faced inherent opposition from a more immediate and tangible concern. Attendance and revenues are tremendously preoccupying challenges to modern theater:

It is an unfortunate, even disappointing outcome in Toronto, but the practical argument is at least as strong as the political one.

My guess this is a political issue, as there are many Jewish contributors to the opera and staging such play would anger and stop the support of Toronto Stage Company from Jewish supporters. This is a financial issue.

You actually believed in the "artistic decision"? Ok. Well, let's start judging which shows are "artistically good" and simply censor all the ones that we think are "bad"!

Taking the explanation at face value - and why not, given a lack of evidence to the contrary? - the play wasn't "censored". It was pulled as unviable, at the planning stages, by its own producer.

Did you read the article at all?

Rachel Corrie, was a idiot, the only reason she has celeberity, is the fact that she was a clutz, and couldn't keep her balance.

She stuck her nose into something that she couldn't handle.

I am sorry she died, and I do admire her for following her convictions, but she chose her path and screwed up.

You don't get close enough to a bull dozier to do the waltz, it will get you killed.

She was probably inspired by this:

Except the Israelis did not stop and in fact, went over her twice.

I think its good the play is getting publicity, even if they don't show it now, they may create enough interest to show it later.

I would like to see it.

Yeah, its surprising how they use such equipment to bulldoze people's houses and land, when its so dangerous for the people living there.

You do not operate a bulldozer if there is any chance you will hit someone. Unless you are a sociopath.

I think the backing up over her a second time, sort of takes care of that.
