building my first pc

Can anyone help.
i'm in the process of building a new pc, not yet bought a hard drive and trying to decide on either a sata or eide hard drive, but sata is new to me and don't know about the connections, i have a few questions if you can help.
i am using a gigabyte ga8vt880l motherboard and windows xp pro.
1. if i use just one hard drive and use the sata hard drive do i connect it to sata0 or sata1.
2. the drivers for sata need to be installed before windows, i do not have a floppy disk supplied with the motherboard but the drivers are on cd-rom can i install the drivers before starting windows, or should i start windows then remove the disk and install the drivers from the motherboard disk.
3. if i use the sata hard drive how do i connect the cd-rom drive and my cd-rewriter if i connect the two together using master and slave would i connect them to ide1 or ide2.
any help would be appreciated.
