Hegel had this idea, I believe. That god is the universe, and evolves as life and intelligence evolve. When only microbes were around, god was as advanced as them. When the dinosaurs and mammals appeared, god was as advanced as them. When human popped up, god was advanced as us. And as we advance, so god becomes more and more. The problem? Hitler got onto this idea at a time when Germans were the most technologically advanced bunch around, therefore in his opinion they were the closest to god.

this is like that age old arguement...

"did god create man, or did man create god?"

If god exists then strike me down and call me father.

  12. Hey Adam . . . Are you certain about the matter regarding Hitler's philosohical beliefs concerning his race? Hegel? I thought he cherished Neitzche's notions . . . The Super-Man, an impeccable, ingenious, and terribly ruthless individual embodying the ultimate perfection of the human species. Old Adolph supposed either himself or the German people to be Super-Human(s). Please recall, Neitzche was a piteous, deranged recluse who died in poverty and referred to his Super-Man as the "Blond-Beast."

Enraptured Believer: "God is a ubiquitous, omniscient being who looks upon us sinful mortals kindly. His divine providence is great."

    I, myself: "Show me."

    . . . No legitimate response . . . (something garbled about "faith")

As Carl Sagan said, ""Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." Where is your evidence, Adam?

Man created the idea of god to explain the unknown of his existence. Man had many gods to explain the forces of the wind, the sea, fire, etc. As science uncovered and explained these forces, man shed his polytheism for the idea of one mythical god to explain what science couldn't: Why am I here?. Then comes Charles Darwin and the idea of evolution to challenge the idea of a god. Evolution has reason and scientic method to back up its claims while monotheistic advocates use ... faith. And that is where we are today. The battle is raging as we speak.

Huang Po said, "The foolish reject what they see and not what they think; the wise reject what they think and not what they see." Very true.

And I'll leave you with the teachings of Stephen Roberts,

"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."

The two ideas are in no way mutually exclusive.

However, it is not at all an extraordinary claim. You are simply ignorant of a well-known snippet of history. Your ignorance of a thing does not make that thing extraordinary.

    Re: ozmonster

This is the quote that I thought extraordinary:

If I am ignorant because I don't believe in your and Hegel's god then I say your right. My ignorance is your god. What I prefer to know about is reason and science. The word "god" will never enter into my explanation of my universe.

WTF are you talking about? When did I ever say I believed in hegel's god, or any other god?

Our ships have passed in the night.

It seems I interpreted your comma for a semi-colon. That coupled with the follow-up post where you offered links to Hegel's idea and Hitler's beliefs, etc. w/o making your beliefs clear.

Carl Sagan's original qoute applies to the existence of a god and that is how I applied it here. The evidence I was refering to was the evidence of god as the universe.

Carl Sagan is one of my heroes, for his efforts to get the governments and public interested in the stars.
