    What is percentage?

    Say you have 858 and take 228 out of this, what is the percentage?

    And also can you tell me how this is done so I can do it myself next time.

    228 / 858 = 0.266

    So 26.6%

    858/100=228/x
    858x/858=22800/858
    x=26.57

    Set it up as an equation.
    858 is to 100 as 228 is to X
    Multiply 858 by X, that goes on the left
    Miltiply 100 by 228, that goes on the right
    Divide both sides by 858, so that gets rid of 858X, leaving only X on the left.
    Divide 22800 by 858 too, leaving 26.57
    x=26.57 or 26.57%

    Thanks, spider. Man I really suck balls at math. Good job I managed to sneak in a calculator for my uni exam. I don't know how I will ever be able to do an MA though.

    I must be retarded or something. Apparently it is assumed I have dyslexia but I am starting to think maybe I am just retarded. I mean honestly I must be able to do something, I am so fucking slow. I am getting as frustrated with myself. I can see it all in my head I know it is there, but I don't know how to get to it, to grab the answer it just goes like a dream and changes shapes. I get lost. uhhhh man.

    The ironic thing is, I can't do anything when I am sober, I can't even do things I could do normally, now that I have quit drinking. Normally at least I would be good at logic and reasoning, now I can't even get the most basic concepts. Since I stopped drinking, I have started falling behind in university.

    Fuck it I am going for a drink I need to do this dissertation tonight.

    Does that mean you understand already? Say you have 100 and take 25 out of this, what is the percentage?

    Not just at math.

    You are good at enabling! Or is that rationalization? Once the withdrawal ends, you'll be fine.

    I noticed that a lot of people make themselves frustrated at math and then the concepts are harder than they really are.

    A percentage is really just a fraction, so the question to ask is: what fraction of 858 is 228? The answer is simple: 228/858 = 0.2657

    To turn any fraction into a percentage, just multiply by 100. So, 228 is 26.57% of 858.

    I don't get it. So you muli 228 by 100? :shrug: math is just too hard. My brain stops working... I forget.

    Think about small numbers first.

    Say you have 3, and you take out 2.
    That's two out of three = 2/3 = two thirds, right?
    To get this as a percentage, you just want two thirds of 100%
    One third of 100% is 33.3%, and two thirds is 66.6%

    Now do that again, but break it down into multiplying and dividing.
    To get 2 out of 3 as a percentage, you:
    - Start with 100% (3 out of 3)
    - Divide by 3 (to get 1 out of 3) = 33.3%
    - Multiply by 2 (to get 2 out of 3) = 66.6%

    Now do it again with big numbers:
    To get 228 out of 858 as a percentage, you:
    - Start with 100% (858 out of 858)
    - Divide by 858 (to get 1 out of 858)
    - Multiply by 228 (to get 228 out of 858)

    Using a calculator, that's 100 / 858 * 228 = 26.57

    228 out of 858 = 26.57%

    If that makes sense, you might like to think about how it works out to be the same as what James said.

    Yes, because 'per cent' means per 100. It's a way of comparing things on a level playing field. An example might help.

    Adam earns 482 dollars for doing a job but has to pay 59 dollars in tax.
    Bob earns 693 dollars for doing another job but has to pay 83 dollars in tax.

    Who pays the higher tax rate? Its not immediate considering they earnt different amounts. So you say "Well for every 100 dollars they earn how much do they pay in tax?"

    Adam lost 59 out of 482 dollars. I want to make 482 into 100. 482 = 100 * 4.82. So to scale Adam's wages down to 100 dollars I divide by 4.82. To see how much tax he pays I divide his tax by the same amount. 59/4.82 = 12.25. So for every 100 dollars Adam earns he has to pay 12 dollars and 25 cents in tax.

    Bob earns 693 dollars and pays 83 dollars in tax. 693 = 100 * 6.93. So I divide his tax by 6.93 and get 11.97. So every 100 dollars Bob earns he pays 11 dollars and 97 cents tax.

    Now you can easily see Adam pays more tax, since he losses 12.25 dollars compared to Adams 11.97 dollars.

    This is all percentages are, they just rescale everything so you know "How many out of 100?". I something goes up 50% then what used to be 100 is now 100+50 = 150. If something goes down 34% then what was 100 is now 100-34 = 66.

    To be slightly more rigorous [so you can deal with variations of this problem]

    Think of percentage P, fraction F, and decimal D, as different ways to represent the same idea; what part of y is x ?

    1 / 2 = 0.5 = 50%
    F = D = P

    You need to be able to do 6 different transformations to go from any one representation to any other representation.

    F[raction] D[ecimal] P[ercentage]

    D => P multiply by 100
    P => D divide by 100
    D => F a bit involved but start by multiplying top & bottom of D / 1 by 100 and simplify
    F => D Just divide
    F => P F => D and then D => P
    P => F P => D and then D => F
